of a past
best forgotten.
Rings in my ears.
No one stops to listen.
The bird sings in vain.
But you took that bird.
that red canary
that sang of hearts of rust.
You took that red canary
unwound the wire around its feet
that trapped it to the cage
The wire
that no one noticed.
You fed it
on seeds of kindness
even when it shied away
and bit
The bite was weak
and feeble
and tired.
You gave it
your smile.
your warmth.
your world.
And it was weary.
but now it perches
high on trees
singing a golden song.
and everyone
stops to listen.
What did you do?
How did you rescue
that pitiful creature
that wounded bird
and turn it into something
something beautiful
But you always say
you did nothing.
The bird was always there.
Behind the grime and dirt.
Behind the exterior
that no one thought to chip away at
except you.
It sings in the mornings
serenades the sleepy sun
with a warbled greeting
Every time I listen
my heart gets
a little lighter.
And for that.
You deserve the World.
