Second Third Lieutenant Niffle was an Arcglass Integrity Engineer on board the Astrolab. When the Incident occurred, he was outside the dome, inspecting a section of the glass. The force of the winds as the lab hit atmosphere tore his tether loose and sent him tumbling—fortunately toward the ground and not out into space. Somehow he was able to orient himself, get his vacuum suit open to release his wings, and slow his plummeting descent enough that he suffered only minor sprains and bruises when he crashed down into the Starwood. He was found and treated by the gaolers of the Spireshadow Drift, who offered to let him live with them until he acclimated to this new-to-him world. Unfortunately, he was terrified of being outside in this huge, uncontained natural forest (and also allergic), so they guided him toward the Singing Spire, the nearest bastion of civilization. He was so happy to see it that he immediately zipped inside and made himself at home. At first the pack thought he was some kind of never-before-seen (and unusually large) vermin, especially when his taste for paper revealed itself, and attempts were made to chase him out, to no avail. (When one grows up in a relatively small, enclosed environment with hundreds of other dragons, one becomes very adept at finding places to hide—for privacy, if nothing else.) Undaunted, Niffle dedicated himself to winning over these strange, mostly furless dragons, and ultimately his effervescent good cheer endeared him to the majority of them. Of course, Lakeisha had no interest whatsoever in his winning personality and was about to evict him with bloody prejudice when he swooped over to some of her lab's glassware and started commenting on its flaws. Upon learning that he was able to create and repair glass—in particular arcglass—she grudgingly decided that his presence had value, and he was permitted to stay. All bets are off if he ever goes near her notes, though.

Niffle is clever, inventive, and good with his hands. Living on the Astrolab has made jury-rigging solutions second nature to him; his problem-solving creations often appear sketchy, but they usually work. (One exception is his attempts to assist Gowan, which for some reason always cause more trouble than they solve. Possibly it's because of the Lightning tech that Gowan dabbles in.) While he's always ecstatic to help out, he's almost entirely unable to take orders. There's no malice or rebelliousness in him—he just cheerfully says, "Aye aye, Captain!" and then does whatever he was going to do anyway. Fortunately what he does is usually right, if often unorthodox.

» He and Liast are best buds. Liast can relate to the deliciousness of books, and he makes sure that they always have specialty paper and cheap novels on hand in case Niffle gets the munchies. He's also decided that Niffle needs to get more buff (especially those little noodly arms) and has taken on the role of trainer, to Niffle's delight.

» Niffle has gotten more used to being outside in the open, but his allergies make it unpleasant. In order to participate in outdoor activities with the pack more comfortably, he's adapted his old breathing gear to serve as a filter mask. He's also used his familiarity with space gear to create a radiation suit so he can snuggle with Isidra.

» Lakeisha secretly approves of being called "Captain" but will never admit it.
