he is older than he would care to admit;
the immortal spirit in the sky above
who illuminated the world
when he first opened his eyes.

he is known as the kind life-giver -
yet also as the devastating life-taker
for it is he, like a flood washing over,
that shines light on all within his reach.

and there is nothing in the heavens
high above or the lands far below
that shines brighter than he, for if
there were, then surely it would enrage
such a vain, brilliant creature, and surely
it would perish for its wrong-doing.

yet, despite his sometimes surely state
he is most often known to be benevolent
for though many have forgotten his existence
and his works go unsung by the heralds
it is he who watches over all.

it is he, the eternal slumber-less sun,
who listens for the cries of need below
of the creatures bathed in his glowing realm,
and it is he who guides help towards them
as his heart aches along with their despair.

so do not judge him too harshly
for the vain state that his spirit is in,
for long has he lived with only himself as company
and long alone will he continue to live.
