Biography
|
Well anyway, there is a lake/water reservoir across from Pinion. It's about as far from Pinion as you can get without actually leaving the city, Bill lives there. He is not the ferryman but he knows the man well, their relationship is as rocky as the shore and just as turbulent as the lake fails to be. There is no wind in a giant hollow beneath the earth, but there are currents, places where the water rips through the earth and others where it boils along its bed as something far deeper seeps into it from beneath. No matter what pulls on it from its depths the water remains still, black glass cut against cold stone. Bill doesn't want to be here, but there is no way out without braving far more treacherous waters. No escape except for the ones that the waters shaped and then filled, waterfalls cutting off the few crevices that remain open. There are few dragons who can bear their weight, he is not one of them. So he rests at the edge of the lake, waiting for day to finally break over polished glass and free him from this endless night. The ferryman balances on the helm of his boat, a single long pole clutched between his talons as he catches the different currents and allows them to pull him along. There is no lantern dangling beneath his seat, no light except the distant flames of the city. There will be no morning after tonight. Bill does not know what he does on these lanternless voyages, but he does know that it is for the best. No one bothers him here except the ferry. The distance too great, or himself not nearly interesting enough to warrant any involvement. Perhaps both. Asterope doesn't really visit of his own volition, he simply passes by and Bill follows. At the edge of the water they meet, one wanders and the other drifts. They don't speak often but when they do, it is not kind. It's an old resentment, the reason Bill remains stranded no matter how many times the ferry passes.
He's rather diffident and withdrawn, but while he may lack an ego he has far more confidence than most dragons are willing to put up with. He has a patience and a cunning that isn't seen until long after Pinion falls, when he reveals the identities of those that perpetuated the horrors of Pinion to their saviors. Having been allowed to witness the cruelty first-hand and being smart enough to keep his mouth shut until he had the capacity to act against them. When pinion falls it is Bill who sets the dragons of the Outpost upon those deemed worthy of their judgement. They've killed less deserving dragons before, this hunt will be nothing new to them. Bill deals with Asterope himself, and despite his nature he has always been all bite, especially after Asterope's betrayal.
