Mireflame struggled as the mud engulfed his body. It began to suck the hatchling deeper, and he clawed desperately against a tree root, trying to pull himself free. He was able to get one last breath before his head was pulled into the darkness.

Murk flowed around his head, blinding his eyes and forcing him to close his mouth. He finally caught hold onto the tree. Inching his way upward, he broke the mud's surface and was able to breath again. He scrambled blindly onto the tree and plopped down, resting his exhausted body.

"Ha ha! Mireflame is such a wimp!" a voice jeered.

Mireflame wiped some of the dirt from his face and looked towards the dragonets who were standing a safe distance away, watching the fun. He was such a fool. He should have known better than to accept a stupid dare. He could have died.
