These are some snippets of writing I've done for Rail on Flight Rising
As the two fae dragons departed, Rail glanced back at her clanmates. Raeni and Eulalia were both not well known in the lair. They tended to their own needs and ideals while staying in the shadows, letting life go on around them. Rail herself did not know much about the either of the two, except that Raeni was an inventor before joining the Athsomi clan. Eulalia, on the other claw, remained a mystery. He would join for hunting expeditions or attend meetings, but other than that...
"It's not polite to stare, you know."
Rail blinked back to reality. Eulalia's cold yellow eyes bore into her own, revealing nothing except mere irritation.
This guy seems like fun, She thought flatly.
"Maybe she was just thinking about how hot and mysterious you are." Raeni hummed, tapping his claws on his goggles absentmindedly.
Rail's ears burned with embarrassment. "I was not-"
"Whatever," Eulalia snapped, "In any case, we need to decide where to begin."
On queue, Raeni dug into his bag and took out a short, chipped scroll. "I agree. However, I'll leave the plans to Rail. I hope that's alright with you, Eulalia?" He said, glancing at the indifferent Wildclaw.
Eulalia shrugged carelessly in response. "If I recall, she is the current leader of our
coliseum team. I would expect her to have good experience in that category, so I have no objections."
At least they have faith in me, Rail mused silently, I better not disappoint them, then.
Reinvigorated by the unexpected praise, Rail took the scroll from Raeni's claws and rolled it open. The three challenges and their details were scribbled down here - strength, perseverance, and teamwork. Eulalia and Raeni hadn't ever been in the coliseum before. Their skills would be... well, not very useful. Rail flashed a grin towards the scroll. She had a brilliant idea.
"Well, you are right about my expertise in the coliseum," Rail began, "But as for you two, well, you both have never worked in a team." She pointed a claw at the bottom of the list. "So, in that case, we're starting with teamwork. Let's go the the Mire." Rail rolled the scroll back up and gave it back to Raeni.
Eulalia stared at her in utter disbelief. "The Mire?" He spat, "You cannot tell me you're being serious here."
"Actually, I'm dead serious," Rail retorted, "The most rewarding experience comes from difficult situations. You would both learn a lot there."
Raeni stuffed the scroll back into his bag. "I know that you're a renowned teacher and leader in the clan, but..." He shook his head and looked Rail in the eyes. "I will trust you. Just keep us alive, alright?"
Eulalia groaned, but was determined not to let a simple inventor outshine him. "I suppose I don't have a choice." He growled, tail flicking in annoyance. "Well, let's get going, then."
