Olivine had always loved the Wispwillow Grove. It reminded him of home, a place far off to the east shrouded in storms and thunder with great open plains where a young dragon could soar for hours and never see the hint of anything behind fields of amaranth and thistle. There was a beauty in the tranquility.

Of course, the grove was nothing like the fields back there. Here, great towering oaks bent and swayed in the wind to an ancient song as swathes of glistening teal fungi twinkled and winked at the world from under root and fallen branches. But still, that sense of peace was familiar to him.

Of all the places he'd been to -- and there had been so many -- this one always felt the most like home.

But even the warm sense of nostalgia that scurried up his bones and took root in his heart couldn't fill the hole inside him, the longing and sorrow he felt. He hated to be alone. Hated the feeling of uselessness that came with solitude, that ache in his heart that drew him from place to place, always wandering and never staying.

He sighed, a heavy sound that escaped him into the open air. His eyes lazily scanned the greenery and shadows around him. So much joy all around and here he was, weighed along in his own dark cloud of misery. The sting of embarrassment struck at his heart.

An orange-winged butterfly landed on his nose and he sneezed, brushing it off. It fluttered away, he could swear he heard it giggling to itself as it left. Maybe the loneliness really was getting to him. He watched a swallowtail land on a tulip beside him. It flapped it's golden wings lazily as it drank up the nectar, the spots of blue glistening in the glow of the fireflies.

The butterflies had always followed him, his only true companions beside the distant ache in his heart. Clouds of rainbow hue followed behind him, and they were welcome companions, but even their beauty and all the joy they brought him could not give him the peace he longed to feel.

He watched as it took to the skies, following it's path through the breeze. It landed on a rose, but something else caught his eye.

Someone giggled in the grass beside the swallowtail. A wildclaw danced in the heart of the grove, laughing like he had not a single care in the whole wide world. He moved and flexed like reeds in the breeze, his whole body was a canvas for movement, every stretch and beat of his wings casting arcs of light from his crystal-like scales.

The wildclaw's eyes were closed, lost in his own mesmerizing movements. He hummed and ducked under an imperial's paw. He too was dancing. Despite his size, he moved with a flowing grace, like the waters of a stream, calm and steady. The soft silks he wore dipped and waved in the wind.

Together they were a kaleidoscope of purple and gold, snow and shadow, light and darkness. They danced like the sun and moon, the endless push and pull of the skies mirrored in free movements.

Olivine could not pull his eyes away.

The wildclaw paused as he noticed their spectator, silks still blowing with the echo of the dance. Gentle pink eyes met teal. He giggled.

"Come! Join us!" he called. His voice was melodious, the sound of bamboo crackling with laughter and wind in the trees.

Olivine found himself moving before he'd even realized he'd heard him, a blush of pink dancing over silver scales. The two dancers began to move again, winds circling around them. They left space for him.

Olivine tried to fill it, unsteady steps scraping over jungle grass to follow along. The imperial hummed a lively tune to guide them, though he didn't need to. As the breeze twisted and twirled around them it carried a melody Olivine had never heard before yet felt so familiar to his ears.

He closed his eyes and sank into song, swept up in a flurry of gold and green wings. A swarm of butterflies danced along with him, a sight like springtime for anyone watching. The dancers moved on, lost in their lullaby that smelled like home and felt like freedom.
