Subservient to Kar and serving as his assistant and companion, Nyris sees her failure of the Trial of Contagion and her inability to cure disease as a personal failure. Some nights, she regrets perching as close to the mouth of the Wyrmwound as she did - she caught her plague easily, and suppressed it in plenty of time, but it was so severe that she could not bring other bodies to defeat it as she had.

Nyris refuses to disgrace herself with the use of mundane healing methods, even in the clan she and Kar have migrated to. She is, however, privately pleased that this clan has an abundance of healers - because she is still working to develop the skill of healing herself, and thus bestows the Mother's gifts one at a time to attempt to cure them. And while it is certainly not her fault if a dragon is too weak to handle a simple plague, she would rather not kill people with poor judgement and a lack of skill.
