Eleonora thinks perhaps she's attracted to the idea of death. She met the first dragon she ever loved under the watchful gaze of a cluster of stars, like a thousand eyes. Chiara had been veiled by luxurious fabrics and draped in jewels. Looking back, each golden star that shone against those purple scales seems predatory, premeditated, and judging like the stares she felt from space, a weight on her shoulders that drags her back down. At the time though, she felt surrounded by the beauty of the universe, felt like she had floated up to a star-full sky. A sky that cracked and cracked and fell onto her, burying her in the shattered remains of her dreams, revealing the reality that deceit had hid.

Her second venture into love has been more successful so far, or so she hopes. He's honourable, has a strict moral code, and so is unlikely to be an assassin like Chiara. Sometimes, when she lazes in the sun as he takes care of his garden, she asks about killing, about war, about being a former knight in a family of fighters. Sometimes he talks about the pressure, sometimes about the bloody stories passed down generations of relatives, sometimes about the loneliness and disappointment of abandoning his position. Usually he says nothing. And she's fine with that, she has to be. Eleonora does not crave the velvet soft tone that used to accompany her nickname. (Only Chiara ever called her Elle.) She doesn't miss the dark jokes or the dangerous glances aimed at those she disliked (even if it was hilarious to see her academic rival squirm. She doesn't! But then why does she keep glancing around for purple and gold wherever she goes? She just hopes Trystan hasn't noticed...
