Pentes obtained the title of the Bells, but had only done so in order to further control Xanthia while they had been married. The Blood-Ridden Bells Murder is portrayed as Pentes losing control of himself, and being overwhelmed with grief for what he did to his peoples, & it is generally believed due to the fact Pentes would rehabilitate those who survived, along with improving the lives of those within his reign. Pentes doesn't actually feel any form of guilt, only anger that it didn't work on Xanthia the way he wanted it to.
