A Tale of Goods Exchanged

I watch Reiko finish her morning song from the shadows of the grove, my twin tails twitching as my whiskers flick impatiently. I have lots to do today, lots to gather, lots to sell, and I swear her song gets longer each and every day. I can hear my paws dancing on the root I'm crouched on, my eyes locked on the cursed Tenko. Finally, her call ends. The shift has changed. Some are slow to leave. Some are fast. Some linger to chat, while others race straight to Awase for their morning routine. I see her glancing about in my direction, but I don't care. She may have plans, but so do I.

I race along the tighter passes in the ruins around the temple, zipping around tight corners as I scan the area. I'm a scavenger at heart, looking for any shiny or bauble to scoop into my satchel. With my memory, I find it quite easy to spot something new on my route. Little abandoned streamers, dried petals from a festival recently passed, and even small gemstones travelers drop every now and then. Never the stone of a kitsune, just trinkets lost when visiting the temple. So far as I know, I haven't missed a single bauble on my route since I started over a century ago, when I was a young kit.

I spot the first benchmark on my run, a twisting Blue Chinese Wisteria tree stretching towards the sky. As usual, I scoop up some of the fallen flowers, carefully setting them into my satchel. I'm about to keep going when I hear a voice from the gnarled root sticking up from the cobbled street, split by the tree growing in it's path.

"And where do you think you're running off to with those flowers?"

I jump with a startled bark, tails fluffing out as I turn to look at the owner of the voice. Haru, the tree's very own Forest Spirit, is glaring down at me. I start to answer her, eager to continue my usual route when she cuts me off, her four tails lashing.

"I don't care if you're in a hurry. I saw you pick those up. So haphazard! If you got any seeds with that, I'd likely have to cross the entire ruin to tend to yet another Wisteria! I already have to come out here from my grove because one of the pipe foxes decided it'd be fun to plant a seed in the middle of the street. I do not need to go further from my grove to protect my trees."

I slowly check my satchel, my wings folding in a bit as I check for seeds. Sure enough, I'd managed to grab one by accident. With a nervous chuckle, I hold it out to her, a grin on my face. Simple mistake, right? It's an easy fix! She, however, starts to lecture me. She may be two centuries my elder, but that doesn't give her the right to intrude on my own work! I'm slowly starting to seethe when she finally begins to reach out for the seed. I dart back, snarling at her. Oh no. I won't let her just take it back now! As she puffs out to start lecturing again, I suddenly have an idea. This time, I cut her off.

"Hold on there, Haru! I have no need for this tree seed. None of the Festival Shiro would buy it, and I doubt the other Shiro would take it either. Not much they can use it for. You, however, just gave it value to me."

I smile at her, tilting my head as I address her. I could gain from this! I just need to make sure Haru understands I'll accept an exchange for this little bauble of mine. A trinket for a trinket! One kit's trash is another kit's treasure, after all. I don't let my smile waver when her ears fold back, her eyes narrowed.

"Oh no. No, no, no. I will not pay you for one of my tree seeds. That's something I own!"

I simply smile at that. Her property? But it was on the ground! It's fair game for scavengers like myself. Perhaps she sees the persistence in my eyes, or she just remembers the last time I picked up something she wanted. She glowers at me, her claws digging into the root.

"... What are you looking for in exchange for this tree seed?"

I give her my best smile, puff out my chest, then dart to a branch in the tree about the same height as her head. Once I get my balance, I hold the seed up and begin my speech.

"Well, you see, this here is a Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree Seed! Usually difficult to come by in these parts, just one full grove at our temple in fact, and a rare sight to behold! The one here in the town below is a popular site for visitors of the temple due to it's beauty, with blue petals falling like cherry blossoms when the time's right and the seasons change. Everyone's seen the pink blossoms falling, but few get to wade through a sea of blue! To take one home would be a visitor's dream! To make up for that loss, well... I'll need something valuable in exchange."

I stop, that smile still on my face as she lets out a long, tired sigh. She's not going to fight on this one. I feel the silence stretching out about us as she finally hops down from her root, tails drooping. She shoots me one last glare before darting into a little den in the roots of the tree. I wait patiently as I hear her curse the Remnant, the Ashen, and even the great kitsune who came before us as she searches through her little trove. Finally, she returns with a little pouch. I'm about to tell her a satchel simply won't do when she drops it, revealing the precious stone within.

Amber. My namesake. Not just regular amber, either. Yes, I do collect amber, but I crave the pieces with the little fossils trapped within. This one is no exception! The frozen form of a Vermillion Epiptite, or one of it's predecessors, is perched on a twig, likely caught in dripping sap from some long-forgotten Ashen attacking the tree. Haru has a small smile on her face as my eyes alight on the amber, my wings doing a soft little shiver.

"... That'll work."

I dart over, swapping the seed with the amber before she can react. I set my new piece into my satchel, then fly off to my next benchmark, eager to find more trinkets to sell, or in some cases to keep. I hear her calling out to me as I leave, likely to tell me not to take a seed again, but I don't pay her any mind. It's easy enough to pretend I can't hear her through the faint whistle my clipped wing makes as I fly off to continue my search.

See, I'm Kohaku, the Amber-Loving Nogitsune of the Shattered Temple, and I'm a busy little Fae Fox. I have trinkets to collect, baubles to sell to the Festival Shiro of the temple, and goods to hawk to any visitors that cross my path. Sure, I may strike a bargain here or there, and I may find reason to go into dangerous waters if there's a treat in it for me to barter with, but my passion is scavenging, through and through. Besides, I bet travelers would love some of the bits I collected from some of the fallen Ashen after they struck! Even if I tore a wing to get them. Anyone would love a trophy from the Ashen... right?

Nogitsune

These kitsune typically stay wild to the forests and emulate real foxes. The most sociable and least reclusive, other than the Shiro, Nogitsune love to travel and are often close to nature and the elements. They enjoy speaking with travelers and don't easily settle in one place.
