Albert
A wounded soul

His one true love, that's how he had described it once.

Guardians have a pull, a call that drives them insane to find and protect, to safeguard something so fervently that it hurts. His call was painful, swallowing blood-red iron would be harmless in comparison. The only thing that ever came close to the pain of his heart was the bite of his father's strength, drawing forth blood and opening his flesh. He had to find his charge, for he would not allow his son to disgrace him by not doing something so simple, so fundamental for their species.

If his own instincts didn't do the trick, his father did.

He soared the sky and walked until his feet couldn't hold his demarcated form anymore, aimless and desperate.

To love someone, so deeply, so passionately that you would do anything for them. That was his charge, his cross.

When he showed up with tired eyes and a wounded soul in front of his father all he got was a disappointed look and the threat of claws as soon as the door was closed. Under all his faults, Al's father had a virtue; he always kept his word.

Months passed by, he could barely move, every bone screaming at the softest touch, but his gaze finally found someone else's.

Anastasia. Such a sweet woman she was, caring and loving even towards a soldier that had deserted and fled to another town, far, far away just to avoid his responsibilities and drown his sorrows in the dirt and wood beneath his claws.

She had touched him like he was worth something, had looked at his soul and smiled at what she found, and for a while, things were good. The voice in his head drowned out by her laughter and their children's love. Three girls and boy they had, four beautiful kids that clinged to them and shared their happiness.

Four innocent souls that suffered even more than he did when she fell ill, withering within weeks.

He had thought that she was his charge after all those years, but when she asked, he couldn't take away her pain.

It hurt even more when not even their children could fill the void. He would, he really would throw himself to the void for them, his left leg was a permanecer remainder of it, permanently damaged as it was after defending his second daughter and her children, but it wasn't the type of love he craved for, that his soul claimed to have.

Years upon years he stayed with them, until they could leave and be happy, through the worst part of little Mary's life and Anna's desire to be a soldier. Years upon years he withered just to be a good father and do what he thought his beloved would have wanted. Years upon years before his own children told him to leave, for they couldn't ignore the need of their father for his charge anymore, not when daggers weighted so heavily on his rough hands, even when all they wanted was another day with the only parent they had left.

It was like tearing his own heart in half, but in the end, the sickness of the body are nothing compared to the sickness of the mind, and each passing day he slipped just a little bit more because of the missing part of his life. They had assured him that they would be there once he found his charge, waiting for their father to return, to see him smile again.

The barren lands and the flooded wilderness he saw before stumbling upon the lifeless smile of a samurai, bleeding between the treacherous flora of the tangled wood. What had pushed him to lift the man and care for his wounds, he didn't knew, but he dragged the dragon to one of the rotting, old towns that still stood from the Fortress' golden age.

When the bleeding stopped and the man woke up, his golden eyes made Al look away, suddenly feeling small and exposed. He said his name was Synes, and asked why he had bothered to save someone like him.

A samurai of the Taihaku Empire, he said, voice hoarse and still needing help to get precious water down his throat. A place where flowers fell all year round, where beauty, beauty like Al's, could be found everywhere, Synes had said, flirting with his savior shamelessly and making the guardian blush, unused to praise after so long without someone to call mate.

He didn't knew what drove him to accept the kiss either, leaning forward even though he could have rejected Synes, repeat that he didn't felt a thing for the warrior like he had done during his entire recovery.

And when Synes playfully suggested that Al would be a beautiful concubine, he agreed without a hesitation.
