Like his name implies, Basil is a big fan of herbs. He tends his own herb garden with the utmost care, keeping his plants free of insect pests by eating them and maintaining a vigilant watch for any herbivorous scavengers. Every few days, he harvests some of his surplus crop for the clan’s use, and anyone who’s tasted food cooked with his herbs has been forever grateful for his gardening prowess.
What most of his clan members don’t know about Basil is that he wasn’t always a gardener. For most of his life, in fact, he belonged to a band of traveling thieves, intent on stealing anything of value from anyone. Basil liked his reputation as a bad boy, reveling in the hordes of treasure he “earned” and picking fights just because he could. Plus, he always had backup in the form of the other gang members. Or at least he thought he did, until one time he picked the wrong fight. Basil had challenged the leader of a rival gang fully expecting the support of his comrades, but when the time came for the epic showdown, none of them were to be found. They had realized this was a fight they wouldn’t walk away from, and they had left Basil to his fate. The betrayed Pearlcatcher managed to escape with his life, but he knew he had put his faith in the wrong dragons. Worse still, he was one of those dragons himself. From that day forward, Basil vowed to never steal or harm any living creature again. He found a clan who was willing to take him in as a gardener, and found that he enjoyed the craft more than he thought he would. Although he still struggles with feelings of guilt about his past, Basil tries his hardest to focus on the future and to focus on giving instead of taking. |
