A N I M U S ; title
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Trust in your goals and reach for the stars! Even if you'll miss you'll accidentally summon the Shade." • a b o u t • Ani was a veilspun on a mission. She buzzed briskly through the conifer forest, weaving around frost-bitten tree trunks when she had to, but narrowing her eyes and punching through snow-heavy boughs whenever they got in her way. The thorns that covered her body helped with that, tearing her free of any stubborn needled twigs that tried to entrap her. Her mate was sick in nest with a fever, the healers had done all they could, so now it was down to her. Down to me, she thought, and narrowed her eyes when an intrepid hawk dove at her with sharp talons. She hovered in place and took a deep breath, contorting her body into a tight corkscrew like a spiral might do on the regular. The moment before the hawk could snatch her out of the air and haul her off to its nest of hungry fledglings, she straightened back out and roared, far above the volume and deepness a tiny dragon like her should be able to manage, but much closer to that of a lion. The hawk practically fell from the sky with a pathetic squawk, scared to the Shade and back by the sudden unexpected scream, and Ani spat a derisive stream of fire after its tail feathers as it tumbled past her. Snout lifted high, she continued her flight, returning to the focus of her mission. Though the early morning's blizzard snowed out all the caravan paths winding up the mountains to her clan's lair, blocking any merchant coming their way, she knew the trading post located at the bottom of the mountain. What she didn't know is if an avalanche had buried them since she'd last visited, or if any shop would be open after the snowstorm (not that that would stop her, she could bury through a snowdrift to get into a shop if need be), or, withstanding all that, any shop possessed the life-saving potion her mate needed to survive his illness. Maybe a veilspun from the other side of the Cloudscrape Crags was also making their way towards the trading post, right this instant, similarly gripped with the task of saving a beloved one, with the only remedy being the same concoction Ani sought. Maybe they were even already there, or would soon be, and was buying out the last of the stock. That. Would not. Do. Though the wind began to pick up once more, blowing thin sheets of powdered snow into Ani's eyes, sharp and prickling as gnat bites, the dragon whirred her wings all the faster, until like a comet streaking through the sky, she blazed down the forested slopes towards her mate's salvation. ~ "Hoo, what a sight you are!" the snapper shopowner crowed as Animus staggered through the entrance. Snow blew in after her, until the door slammed shut. "Surprised you made it here with the weather like that." "Just glad you're open," Ani gasped, heading directly for the fireplace where flames fed hungrily on a couple of logs. She huddled over its blessed heat, still buzzing her wings just slightly to stave off the frost creeping over their edges. "It is the middle of the night," the snapper chuckled. "But, being who I am, I make sure to keep the lanterns lit at all hours. So that any lost travelers such as yourself might find what they need! So! What can I help you with, this fine evening?" "Not a traveler," Ani corrected, turning to scan the shop's shelves. "I'm looking to help my sick mate." "Ah, I have a few medicines stocked," the snapper began, moving towards a certain section of the shop. "Though the apothecary would certainly be a better place to look, seeing how they're closed, let's see what we can . . ." They trailed off as Ani turned away and headed down the food aisle. "Oh, this way, actually--" "I'm not here for medicine," Ani interrupted, stretching up on her toes to reach the shelf she needed. Her wings were still too fragile to fly. "Oh good, you still have some!" With a soft oomph as the sack of powder practically fell on her, she dragged it back to the owner's desk and swung it up on top with mighty effort. The snapper followed her back, looking confused, and checked the bag's label. They stared. "You flew through that tempest to get hot cocoa? I thought your mate was sick!" Animus sighed fondly, patting the bag in affectionate exasperation. "Dramatic little beetle. Said he'd die without a good mug." She winked. "I, personally, would like to avoid that." The snapper nodded slowly, only looking more confused and maybe a little upset. "Well, I hope you get it back to him safely," they mumbled, accepting the pieces of treasure Ani pushed their way. "Have a nice night?" Animus heaved the bag onto her back and gave her wings an experimental twitch. Sure, thawed enough. She'd probably make it back to the lair. "Good night!" she chirped, and buzzed out the door back up the mountain, to fulfill her mission.
