The veilspun predator roamed over the badlands towards their prey with a quick and fluid motion, his movements like water rushing over the dry and broken earth. His target didn't notice. The antelope was alone. It was lost. It would be his.
Contagion knew only of his hunger as he heard the thump-thump-thump of the bovid's heart, it was not as afraid as it soon would be. The heart would be the best part, the tastiest. The creature was fresh. It was alive. Not for long. The red of the veil's wings and scales shimmered like the clay and iron in the rust-red earth of the cracked landscape, as he leapt towards the springbok, aided by the slant of his wings as he arced through the air. The creature saw him this time. It ran off towards the hills. It was fast. Contagion was faster. The antelope's heart raced with its legs as it fled against the gaining predator, it knew it was fighting a losing battle, running a failing race. It didn't care. It had to try. It wanted to survive, almost as badly as Contagion wanted to eat. When the veilspun grabbed for the creature, it did what it could until the very end. A hoof coming down hard on the veil's paw. It broke the bones there as it was put down. Contagion could feel the thrumming of his heartbeat in the injury as he began his feasting. The veilspun didn't care, in time the bone would knit back together. All that mattered was the creature had become his, had become dead, that he was faster, that he could eat.
