Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Varya
Before Varya, I had seen imperials before, but always at a distance. Ignacia deals with them more than I do, and there aren't really that many in our corner of the world to begin with. Much like the ancient breeds, they pass through every now and then, but I couldn't tell you of an imperial who lived within any less than a three-to-five-day walk from us. I'm considered a rather strange dragon by many, but I'm pretty standard in the fact that I've never really interacted with Sornieth's biggest beasts. It's certainly more common of a phenomenon than it was when I was young, and I know many dragons now who have known multiple members of the species, but it's still enough of an unusual occurrence that I was really basing most of my knowledge off the generally accepted stereotypes.
Of course, that means the first one I met had to literally come from a clan that followed those stereotypes pretty much to a T, and she rebelled against them.
Though she lived most of her young life in Lanternlea Port, Varya was born here in the Hewn City almost a century after I was born, to a clan whose rigid insistence on imperial purity went so far as to prevent association with the pearlcatcher species altogether. There's an almost eerie similarity to Varya and Amias's upbringings, but Varya weaved through her life in a way that poor Amias could never imitate. She could talk the talk and walk the walk, giving her parents and extended family no reason to think she was dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.
But she was. Oh, how she was. There was an entire world out there that she was missing, even in her own city. Her family kept her confined to the imperial circles of the world, showing her off to suitors that would boost the clan's reputation at any opportunity they got. So Varya made a habit of sneaking away in the darker hours, befriending the "lowly, lesser species" that help make Sornieth so fascinating (she found a particular affinity towards the fae after she started frequenting a bar run by a fae family who she still speaks fondly of to this day). And of course, in all her wanderings that led her farther and farther each night from a house that never felt like home, she found Amias.
She says she fell in love with him that first night, when they spent so long together that it resulted in the first and only time she got caught sneaking back into the imperial circle. And the more she saw him in the years to come, the more she entertained the idea of running away. The socialite life they shared was slowly killing Amias, and Varya had had just about enough of living in a place where she could not proudly show off the dragon she loved without fear of swift and brutal judgement. Finally, after a day which both of them refuse to speak of, even to Cael, Varya took Amias and fled for the shadows of a sister realm she'd only ever heard stories of. When it became clear that Amias's family was hunting them down, they traveled as deep as possible into the Foxfire Bramble, the pair of them met Cael, and the rest is history.
Varya's definitely the one I'm closest to in the Outcast Trio; she's the only reason I know anything substantial about the lives they've led. They've gotten to the point where they try to make it to Chiaroscuro during the tail end of the warmer months, and spend the autumn and winter in their cozy house at the Zenith. It doesn't always work out; Cael's the one who keeps in touch with the clan's well-informed side, and if anyone suspicious is sniffing too close, the three of them pack up and leave. Varya's family has not come after her, surprisingly enough; maybe they assume she will realize the "error of her ways" and return to them someday. Varya once told me that if she ever considers such a thing, I am supposed to stop her from going back with force if I must, no matter what she says at the time.
"Better I were to die at your hands than resume a life that pretends the two loves of my life amount to nothing more than the dirt under my claws."
In recent years, the pursuers have tapered off, likely due to the presence of the emperor who makes his way across the flats of the Sunbeam Ruins day after day. Varya, Cael, and Amias travel through his wake when they are forced to relocate, and have made many allies with the nomadic clans that sneak about the trail of destruction. Even with the tumultuousness of her life thus far, Luminax is the only being that Varya truly looks upon with fear, so much so that she even made an announcement to the entire clan, warning us away from the beast at all costs. Even the most dangerous among us heeded her warnings. And now, when I watch the three dragons who would give anything to have a permanent home with us run headlong towards the most dangerous creature walking this planet to escape their own pasts, I cannot help but silently beg those pasts to test my clan, who would fight an emperor if we had to to protect our family and way of life.
They would be nothing more than the dirt under our claws in comparison.
