"I am not afraid." The younger dragon's chin was set, eyes like flint as they stared down the older dragon. "Let me fight.""Then you are a fool." I snapped back, the fur of my mane lifting as I glared back at him. "Only a fool charges into battle with no fear."
"But you said fear holds you back and gets you killed!" Their tail lashed once, sending leaves scattering across the dry ground of the training field.
"Fear that consumes you is dangerous, no fear is its own danger." I glanced around, taking in the other trainees who had paused to listen to the conversation. "A warrior who has no fear gets themselves and those around them killed. Lack of fear causes you to be reckless, charging into things without a second thought. Fear makes you think, fear keeps you alive, fear is good for you. Do not let it consume you but do not leave it behind either.
"A good warrior knows when to be afraid, when to flee and when to stand their ground." I glanced around, meeting each of their eyes. "You must learn to respect your fear and keep it close, for it will save you in your greatest hour."
I let them think on this for a moment before dismissing them for the day. Watching them put their weapons away and return to their homes I sighed wearily.
