The thing with battle is that it isn’t complicated. __Okay, yeah. Strategy is complicated. Your opponents are complicated. But you usually just have one goal: to win, at all costs, without dying yourself. __But the Council. They are very complicated. Because I’m gone a lot, they constantly change their goals. I am never up to date on anything when I return, and I have just barely had enough time to comprehend the changes before I am sent back again to the battlefield. I’m a Councillor in name only. __Today, I came back from a particularly exciting trip, with Raymundo in tow. She had just completed her training and was ready to be sold to train other dragons. __Pitch met me in the foyer as I approached. “Raymundo. Good to see you again. Go see the battle coordinator, please, I need to bring Shadow to today’s Council meeting.” __As Raymundo set off, I turned to Pitch and asked, “What changes were made while I was away?” __Pitch scowled. “You’ll see.” __I walked into the main Council room. The Councillors each sat at their respective seats, clearly waiting for me to sit down. Dusk made a big show of rolling his eyes. I sank into my chair in between him and Raven. Pitch stood up and said, “I call to order today’s Council meeting. First on the agenda, I’d like to discuss our current situation with a certain secret that somehow has been leaked.” __Ebony said, “I can’t believe the Council would do something like this. It’s really mean, and I think we should have trusted those dragons more.” __Murk nodded, adding, “I think it would be best if we remove all traces of those elements before they confront us, then we can play it off like it was just an unreliable rumor.” __“I completely agree. That would prevent any damage we take and convince more dragons to take our side.” Dusk looked around the room, and his eyes settled on me. He smirked. “What do you think, Shadow?” __Crap. The entire Council’s eyes were on me now. Of course, I had no idea what was going on, because I’m only here for meetings, and we hadn’t addressed anything like this before.“I, um, think that the… rumor in question has… um… I mean we should… What Murk said. Yeah. That.” __Pitch blinked. “Shadow, what exactly do you think is going on here?” __“To be honest,” I murmured, “I wish I knew.” __Every dragon in that room gave me looks of disappointment, except Dusk, who I could tell was trying to stifle a laugh. Pitch slammed his hands on the table. __“You know what, Shadow? I’m sick of your ignorance during these meetings! Dusk, can you do me a favor and explain what’s happened?” __“Gladly, Pitch.” Dusk’s smirk grew wider as he said, “Before there was an entire Council like we have now and back when we were first starting here, Pitch laced the walls of the Light, Arcane and Plague hallways with all of the elements that make them weak. Somehow, the rumor has gotten out and is spreading around the clan like wildfire, and we need to get to the bottom of it. Honestly, Shadow, it’s almost like you’re never here for anything important.” __Pitch nodded. “Thank you, Dusk, although we could have gone without that last part. But he is right, Shadow. You should learn how to balance your responsibilities as Councillor with your battle outings, or face the consequences.” __This wasn’t the first time he’s said those exact words to me. It’s gotten real old, real fast. Clenching my fists under the table, I snapped, “Oh yeah? What would those consequences be?” __The room became so silent, you could hear a pin drop. Pitch’s purple scales on his face grew redder and redder as we stared at each other. I can’t see myself, of course, but I imagine I looked defiant and almost triumphant, while Pitch just looked angry. Angrier than I’d ever seen before. __“Shadow,” Pitch said softly, voice dangerous, “If you must know, that would mean expulsion from the Council if you continue at the rate you’re going at.” __I smiled. “You know, Pitch, I never wanted to be here in the first place. I suck at diplomacy, I can’t manage my time on my own, and I’m always away. Maybe you should kick me out. I’d be just fine with that.” __The rest of the Council collectively gasped. If looks could kill, I’m sure I’d be fried to a crisp by seven red hot glares. We remained that way for a solid minute. __Finally, Pitch closed his eyes. “Everybody out. Except Shadow.” __The Councillors filed out and closed the door, but knowing them, they were probably all pressed up against it, trying to listen to what was going on in this room. __Pitch sat down. “It’s just you and me now, Shadow. I want you to tell me why you want to leave the Council. I’ll try my best not to get mad, but you have to work with me here.” __“When you brought me into the Council, you made it abundantly clear that I would have to do a bunch of boring Councillor stuff, but the truth is, I can’t do any of it. I also don’t like it when you make me feel like I’m disappointing everyone when I’m not prepared for these meetings. It’s all just too much, and I can’t do everything, but battle is what really appeals to me. I don’t want this Council stuff anymore.” __Pitch blinked and cocked his head, confused. “What about the power of being a Councillor? Don’t you want that?” __“The power doesn’t appeal to me at all,” I said and watched Pitch wince. “I don’t think I need to be the one in this position.” __“Oh, Shadow. The thing is, yes, you are. You may not see it now, but there is a reason you were chosen to fill the position you currently hold."
