They/Them
They strayed from the nest, wandered too far,
Drawn to a circus, a glorious stitched star.
The caravan searched, the family wailed,
But all attempts to find Reverie tragically failed.
Drawn to a circus, a glorious stitched star.
The caravan searched, the family wailed,
But all attempts to find Reverie tragically failed.
Reverie was so curious as a hatchling. Their desire to explore and know the world around them led them from the safety of their family’s caravan, deep into the woods.
A hundred different vile fates could have found the young dragon that night, but somehow Reverie found the Carnival first. They didn’t know to fear the uncanny performers and terrified audience, laughing and clapping at the grandness of the show. They cooed over the strange sewn animals, giggled at the jester’s antics and gazed starstruck at the Magician’s impossible feats. Truth be told, little Reverie had won over most of the circus even before Pin and Needle realized what the hatchling was capable of.
They were a bit frightened when morning came and they couldn’t find the shining gate that had lured them inside. They wandered the maze of booths and tents, crying out for their parents. Pin and Needle swooped in at that moment, dried their tears, and took them under their patchwork wings. They intended to keep Reverie around solely for entertainment, perhaps teaching them the trade of a carnie, but discovered something far better when the hatchling learned to sing.
Reverie’s melodies are unique and haunting, ringing out with many voices instead of one. Their songs paint the air in brilliant colors and shining lights that dazzle the eyes and inspire potent emotions in all who experience it. Their singing can soothe fiery tempers, charm beasts, and (most importantly) lure listeners to its source.
They’re not so young and naïve, now. They know they were kidnapped. They know that the Carnival hurts people. They could leave, if they chose, charm their captors with their sweet voice and have them reveal the gate. But Reverie is torn. They’ve lived here so long, they were raised by these monsters. They’ve been loved and cherished. Do they really have the heart to leave the only home they’ve truly known?
