The Mountain of Light

The Queen of the South

She calls for you across space, speaks to you in soft words. She longs for your company, and so late at night you rouse yourself and begin the journey. You know where she resides. Of course you do. Her palace is of crystal quartz on a dark matrix, a mountain forever in the distance. You have heard stories. There is a reason death is so finicky in Sornieth. Her vitality has a far reach, stretching across borders.

The pale mountain looms above you, and you feel your skin crawl with joy. You cannot hear her voice but you know she is there. The white queen, the spirit of the south, the benevolent ruler over all that lives. You climb. Your claws slot into niches in living stone. No rocks fall down the craggy sides, no sand sticks to the bottoms of your feet. Your heart roars in your chest, pounding like a lion's feet on the savanna earth. Each breath fills you with blinding light. You climb. She lives at the top in her impenetrable palace, and you ascend towards her, your body pulls you, it would pull you even if you were not willing. You climb.

You cannot see her. You will not see her. The light that emanates from around her swallows her form. But you hear her voice, musical and ancient. You gasp as the light envelops you, tears coming to your eyes. You feel alive. Your soul burns within your body, longing to break free. Dear heart... she murmurs. You must not stay here. A pebble falls down from the slope of the mountain. A sherd, barely the size of an acorn. You scoop it up, bones aching. She has given you a gift, a precious thing. You must treat it as such.
