Pan's favourite book of bedtime stories. No one's sure where it came from. It might be a book he magically mutated. It might... not. 
HAT. Panoptes responds poorly to the cold, his gelatinous sludge form congealing in the chill. Consequently he has a beanie for when it gets cold, big enough he can nestle inside it fully if he wishes.

PERSONALITY Panoptes is a sweet natured eldritch thing. It has no gender and though it looks like a spiral it may not be one - it may be a mimicking... thing. "Thing" is generally agreed to be the best term for it. It's okay with this. Generally Panoptes is seen either following its "Dada" Bilberrios around, noodling over the floor and leaving a trail of slime in its wake as it tries to observe its father's experiments or following Porcelain around - Porcelain it follows by flying just as she does and Bilberrios is most put out that Pan slimes and noodles and messes up his labspace but is shockingly neat and non-messy in the Infirmary. ABOUT Panoptes is an Eldritch Cauldron Experiment Mistake for which everyone blames Bilberrios. Bilberrios' usual experiments to create genes, breed changes, eye vials, etc. (with the end goal of making whole complete dragons aside from Bogsneaks) resulted in an unstable mixture from which came... Panoptes. One day it just glopped out of the cauldron, looked up at Bil and went "Dada!" Bil does not enjoy his slimy noodle kid. He was not expecting a slimy noodle kid. He was hoping for two very specific kids he was working to create and was instead shocked, surprised, taken aback, and Does Not Know How To Parent. Unfortunately, he is now followed everywhere by slimy noodle kid. His wife Porcelain thinks this is cute. Panoptes has decided Bil is its father. Bil cannot escape. To make it worse, Porcelain is not just Bilberrios' wife, but also the clan healer and it was she who carefully examined Panoptes to understand how it works, including reflex clapping games. The first Tethys heard of the new baby was a dispute: Bil commenting "No- babe, don't encourage it-" and Porcelain's outraged: "IT'S A BABY, BIL." This has rather set the tone for Panoptes' continued presence in the clan. So far as everyone can tell, Panoptes has no gender and even breed is kind of up in the air. Its sludgelike form allows it to reform however it likes but for some reason it seems to most prefer the long noodly spiral form - Bil is certain this is because it knows it frustrates him. Porcelain thinks it's because Pan knows she thinks it's cute. Both may in fact be true. As it is no one knows why Pan is so attached to Bil in particular despite the fact that Bil is objectively awful at parenting. Pan definitely loves Porcelain, but it is affixed on Bil as Dada and this is forcing Bil to learn how to parent. Generally it is hoped that Pan's presence will force Bilberrios to learn how to parent before his ultimate experiments finally hatch, so he can actually be a decent parent to them. Panoptes' bodily sludge is not unlike gelatin or vaseline in texture and tastes sweetly of blackcurrant jam. It is known to gnaw on its own tail at times. By speaking to the clan's various Seers, some further idea about Panoptes' likely growth rate has also been achieved. The general consensus is that it will most likely take Panoptes at least a thousand years to reach any kind of meaningful maturity - and would be huge upon achieving that. Visions seem to indicate that physical maturity and mental maturity will go hand-in-hand with Panoptes, and they'll settle more firmly on what gender/s they are, be that more masculine, remaining neutral, or some combination thereof. Regardless, in the present, it is generally acknowledged that Pan defaults to them/it pronouns because it's still a mimicking eldritch Thing of indecipherable Whatsness, but will accept he/him on occasion. Further visions have also suggested that as Panoptes grows up and grows bigger - to a truly terrifying degree of bigness, it has been pointed out - their voice will go from shrill childish exclamations to slow, deep rumbling, to the point of being kind of concerning. Given that, with such a voice, yells could easily sound like there's an earthquake in the VOLCANIC MOUNTAIN CAVE SYSTEM the clan lives in, many are concerned and hoping to encourage Pan to be mindful of his volume. At least so far the visions indicate that Pan will never set off an earthquake, which is generally held to be for eldritch reasons. NOTABLE MOMENTS Bil: I know you can cludge yourself into another sludgy form. Why don't you look like me? Or Porcelain? Pan: Dada! [hands reach out for hugs] Bil: No, no hugs until you try another form, we agreed, we're testing out your shapeshifting ability. Pan: DADA! Bil: Come on, kiddo, try with me here- Pan: *horrible eldritch ablurgling* Bil: *shaken* A-all right, y-yes, okay. Hugs now. RELATIONSHIPS

Panoptes loves all of his sisters, and Verbana, Cenotaph and Brea have been with him longer even than Chalice has. While he'll often adventure off with Chalice he also enjoys time spent with these siblings, and is notoriously nosy about them when allowed to be. |
