Blue flickers on the corner of your eye - water? It's a thought you quickly dismiss as you glance over the vast sandscape. The heat feels even more painful now, yet the sun has just risen. You recall last night: they had discovered your scheme and you awoke with banging on your door. With no time to plan, you only had a moment to pack all the treasure and gems you could.

The air shimmers, teasing you with soft ripples, but you know the mirage merely reflects off simmering sand. A curse escapes you as you kick sand over the imitation, lamenting at your choice of escape. This part of the Blacksand Annex was the last place they'd search, but for good reason - travelling dragons shared tales of a vengeful spirit with wings of flame, often the speaker's hide nothing more than a black char. You shiver, remembering a particular day their gnarled claws pointed at you, a scarred eye that twisted in its socket as a rasping voice repeated "Abandon all hope... abandon all hope..."

You force the voice out of your mind, turning to the distant silhouette of the Great Furnace. Your old partner-in-crime had a hideout at the base of it, and it'll be nice to share a cool drink. You should also be able to continue auctioning hatchlings, perhaps together - you won't raise any suspicion from the community this time. And again, you see that bright blue. If only it was water, you think bitterly, but its nothing but another damned mirage. It wavers before you in mockery and...the heat! The heat feels like it's searing your scales, and you wouldn't be surprised if you were already in hell's inferno.

The heat is suddenly so great that it distorts the colour into something like a ring of blue fire. The haze seems to encircle you, and you can't help but step back. Fiery eyes, not just orange but burning with a blue core, fix upon yours. The only confirmation of its existence a booming voice: "You think you can escape your crimes by simply running away? Think again!" it snarls, and the world blurs as something slams your sides.

You feel weightlessness, then numbness as you slam onto the sand. A burn marks your side, leaving the steaming imprint of a large claw, raw flesh where scales once were. When the pain finally comes, you involuntarily find yourself writhing. "W-wait! Forgive me! I'll come back! Please, I'll do anything! ANYTHING ! " you scream, but there is simply laughter. The pain does not fade, but it begins to get worse. The laughter, it seems to echo around you, the loud hysterical barks finally fading as it blurs into nothing - simply a mirage? You feebly laugh at the thought as you examine your injury.

Despite the heat, you shiver and feel a deep chill. Was it always this cold? You grip your chest and draw your arms around yourself. Little do you know the pain will continue, unable to heal. It will eat at you until you fall from exhaustion and pain.

A voice echoes on the wind, "Abandon all hope, abandon all hope, ye who enter here."
