"one hundred," from Latin centum; meaning shifted to "hundredth part"

A little Spiral was born to unremarkable parents. A traditional clan, she went to her new home as a hatchling. Her new clan was old and isolated. She was the 100th dragon in the clan and was given the name Centaine. Centaine was trained as a gatherer. She went out and foraged for food, trinkets, and materials. She made friends with the other gatherers and the other 99 dragons in the clan.

Just like any other day, Centaine prepared herself for her work, taking just enough provisions for herself and an extra few satchels for the things she found. She was very pleased with herself, she and one other gatherer were chosen for a longer expedition out of the Southern Icefield. Once she and her friend were out of the Frigid Floes, they went in opposite directions, planning to meet at home in a few days.

Centaine had only ever been outside the Southern Icefield once with an older clanmate as a guide. This was her first time alone. She was as excited as she was nervous. Despite her nerves, she quickly grew more excited about all of the new things she found. New flora, new fauna, new ores, new trinkets she had never seen in her native habitat. She happily collected things, even pausing to sniff the flowers along the way. She barely even noticed it was completely dark out, her night-vision just as sharp as her vision in the day. However, she did notice that she had gone off the paths and now had no idea where she was. All of her anxiety over her new trip had disappeared at her new discoveries and she was sure she’d find a path if she kept on.

As she searched for items to take home and the path, she encountered two dragons, a Spiral and a Skydancer. Both had dark markings all over their bodies. Eerily still, they both had their heads bowed together as if in prayer. Centaine didn’t want to interrupt them, waiting until either of them moved. The Skydancer wore a bright white wolf cape over his face which struck Centaine as odd. It wasn’t nearly cold enough for that, but they could have been from somewhere warm and not used to temperate weather.

The Spiral nudged the Skydancer with his head. The Skydancer turned his head to look and they were both staring directly at her.

“Excuse me,” she called out to them.

The Skydancer seemed startled at being spoken to.

“Could you assist me in finding a path?” she asked.

The Skydancer nudged his friend. “She’s talking to us, Daisy.” Centaine heard him murmur.

Daisy, the Spiral, looked malnourished and exhausted. He had a strange, dark mane matted with brambles and leaves.

“I do not mean to disturb you. I have become lost,” Centaine called out again. She took a step toward them, hoping to hear them better.

The Spiral growled at her.

“Calm down, my love,” the Skydancer said, placing a gentle talon on Daisy’s mane. Addressing Centaine, “I’m Chérie. This is Daisy. Don’t mind him, he’s hungry.”

Centaine wanted to help. “Do you need help foraging? If it pleases you, I have some extra-”

“His hunger is not of this world,” Chérie explained.

Centaine didn’t know what to make of that. She began to think it might be a good idea to keep her distance from the strange couple. “Oh, well… I require assistance in finding a path.”

“There is one a while that way,” Chérie said, gesturing behind them. “Wasn’t there, Daisy?”

Daisy blinked and it was then that Centaine noticed that his eyes glowed under his goggles. She realised that Chérie’s eyes glowed under his wolf cape as well.

Unnerved, she said, “Thank you. I will be on my way now.” Centaine made her way around them, looking over her shoulder. Daisy met her gaze every time she looked back. She hurried in the direction Chérie had pointed.

She found the path quickly, and followed it for a few days before she realised that she had gone the wrong way. So she had to double back, going home as quickly as she could. She was now almost two weeks late from when she said she would meet the other gatherers at home, they were bound to be worried sick.

When she found her way back home, she was greeted by a friend. “Centaine, you must come quickly,” he said.

Her friend took her to the medic. The medic explained that a plague had come to their home. She believed that the other gatherer had brought it back with him. Many of their clanmates had all ready died. She eagerly took the plants and insects she brought to make medicines. Almost all dragons were confined to their dens with only the medic and her apprentices going between.

Centaine took a few days to rest from her trip and immediately went to help. She tended to those left and foraged for nearby resources. Even with all the precautions, she soon fell ill to the same fever that took her friends. The healer and her apprentices were overwhelmed and because all the gatherers were ill, they were running woefully low on supplies. Through her feverish haze, Centaine saw shadows moving around and got the chills. She even heard the voice of her friend who had left the Southern Icefield with her. “Let go, my friend. Be free of your sickness.” She put it down to her illness. She spent most of her time asleep after that.

Like a miracle, she awoke feeling clear and awake for the first time in days.

Through a wall of ice, she saw a dragon she didn’t recognise. A Spiral, wearing a scarf and bloody bandages. This dragon was scrambling around the caverns. He seemed frantic, either lost or looking for something. Centaine chased after him, he was creating a ruckus and others were trying to sleep or work in peace. He thoughtlessly knocked things over and tore apart any room he entered. As she passed her clanmates, they did not acknowledge her or the dragon she was following.

“AAAAAAAAA,” the Spiral wailed, clawing at a dead end.

“Calm yourself!” Centaine hushed him. “Can you not see, others are unwell here.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-hello,” the Spiral stammered and gasped.

“What is it you are seeking?” Centaine asked.

“A-ha-ha-ha season. Or-or a love. Yes… Yes. Ah ha ha ha. Someone I loved.” The stranger sounded like he was hyperventilating.

“You seek a dragon then? Who are they? I can tell you if they reside here.”

“Ah, ah ha. You-you would n-not know.” As he spoke, the Spiral slid down the wall. He frantically tied his tail in knots with his claws.

Centaine could see that this stranger was in a bad way so she tried a new tactic.

“What is your name?” she asked quietly, trying to calm the stranger.

“Li-Li-Light or some- Is what Sh-She named me. I-I-I don’t…”

“It will all be all right,” Centaine sat beside the stranger who didn’t know his name. She gently took his talons in hers. “I will help you. Let us go to the medic. She will fix you up and you will remember yourself.” The stranger was frightened and Centaine didn’t want to scare him further. “My name is Centaine.”

“Cent-Cent like Lu- AAAAAAAAAAA!” The stranger spasmed and fell to the floor seizing.

Centaine had never seen someone have a seizure before and she didn’t know what to do. Soon the stranger lay still, unconscious. She called out for a medic but no-one answered her… so many of the dens were empty now… She decided to go get the medic and bring her to the stranger rather than trying to carry him. She ran to find her or one of her apprentices. As she ran, she passed her own den.

The healer was there. Kneeling over… her? The stranger forgotten, she approached her own body. It was undoubtedly her, the distinct blood red markings… Her cloak and satchel lay nearby. Centaine didn’t know how to take it in.

She left her den when the medic instructed her clanmates to move her body. She followed them out of the caverns, they had made cradles out of ice and set the bodies to sea. When walking back to her home, Centaine saw the stranger, he’d made his way out of the caverns. His eyes under his goggles glowed and he took off into the sky. His flight pattern was erratic, it looked like he forgot to flap or hold his wings out and only remembered after plummeting several feet.

Centaine thought about following him, she really did. But as she watched her remaining clanmates wandering around, going about their business, she wanted to do her part to help. Everyone who was left was caring for each other.

━━━━━━━━━━━━

Centaine continued to bring herbs and food back for her clan as they perished.

Eventually her whole clan was gone and there was nothing she could do. But Centaine still looked after her home, she carried her clanmates' bodies and she cared for the caverns. And she was all alone until a Tundra and her family moved in. And they brought with them one half blind Wildclaw who could see her.
