The youngest daughter of Serezha and her original mate Brik, born from an impulsive "for old time's sake" nest they shared, Serenity is absolutely certain that she, rather than her niece Serendipity, should have succeeded Serenade as clan leader. She's also positive that if not for Augustine's bias against Pearlcatchers, she would have. (She's got a point about Augustine, but "should" is kind of an elastic concept - it's not like the clan has established succession rules.) She's not going to scheme against Serendipity or anything - well, not much - but she's also not going to just passively accept being sidelined. And part of her plan to combat that is to make sure she has offspring that aren't Pearlcatchers. They should be beautiful, prestigious, brilliant, and definitely not Pearlcatchers, so that's what she's seeking in her mates, until she can somehow oust Augustine or at least undermine his influence over her much-older sister Serenade and the other clan elders.
