Renek was born far away from the Starfall Isles in the City of Helios. Soon after he hatched, however, the Duneraider bandits that lived out in the Wastes surrounding the city kidnapped him, intending to raise him as one of their own. Even at just a couple of hours old, though, the young Pearlcatcher was a fierce little fighter, and the bandits abandoned him to the mercy of the desert when he proved more trouble than he was worth. He was delirious when Nameless found him, still struggling to crawl through the sand dunes to return home. But even half dead, the huntress could see potential in his pale, angry eyes, so they took him back to the Apolkyrfas. The Pearlcatcher grew up surrounded by the bone cairns and strange music of the Ossuary. He was taught in all the studies of the world by Adinos and trained in physical prowess by Nameless, and although they did not love him more than one can love a pig to the slaughter, he loved them. Soon, under the guidance of Nameless and the direction of Adinos, he began to conduct raids on other clans--stealing scrolls, tomes, anything that contained a single fragment of new knowledge. Now, he travels between the very desert where he was born and the Ossuary, conducting raids on Helios itself. And when he returns with a new bag stuffed full of stolen scraps and theories, before he submits the information to the Library, he presents his finds at the peak of a cairn to the assembled Forum. Adinos watches in approval and a twisted kind of pride as his ultimate meal grows ever stronger.
