—–—Their natural scaling resembled the plating of warped snappers closely enough that they were mostly ignored and allowed to wander across the plains of the Other, searching for the receding veins of elemental magic with their insectoid eyes. They followed one such vein to where it pooled at the abbey, a small reservoir fed and tended by Rediero and her allies. Their ability to locate veins of magic, combined with Rediero's ability to reroute them to feed the well in the abbey, immediately made them a valuable asset. Cuprite was the fifth to arrive at the Abbey.

—–—Their many hybrid aspects are more visible up-close: their bogsneak and coatl heritage is visible in their forked tongue, visible when they speak, and the little branches in their horns hint at imperial antlers. They've taken to pinning roses from the creepers in the courtyard to scraps of lace, which they wind around their limbs. They replace the roses daily, and water the creepers whenever they can. Their focii and primary weapon is a monocle over their right eye, which focuses and increases their ability to see and draw out the veins of magic from the land, warped, or other creatures. They also use their innate arcane energy to form shields and barriers, which absorb the brunt of attacks directed at them.

"'Dier, there's a snapper in the courtyard."

Virus glanced out one of the crumbling windows on the second floor at the hulking creature nosing at rocks and pawing at the cracked cobblestones. Somehow, it had made it past the diverting wards Rediero had laid down around the abbey.

Rediero called from the lower floor, "How extensive is the plating? Is it aggressive?"

"A little on the flanks and wings, it doesn't seem to be too warped. It's tearing up the courtyard, though."

Virus could hear Rediero's talons clicking around on the lower floor. The wandering warped snappers occasionally walked past the abbey, collecting detritus to bring to the Crater. She had never seen that landmark in person, but Rediero had shown her bloodstained sketches upon limping back to the abbey after days spent sprinting across the Other. Looking back out the window, she noticed a flash of green and tawny brown movement in a corner.

"'Dier, get it out."

"If it's not aggressive, it's better to let it leave of its own accord..."

The young banescale-shaped echo flapped unsteadily out from behind an arch, and hobbled toward the busily digging snapper. Virus almost bit her tongue out of nervousness. One gloved claw instinctively found her spellbook, and she began the slow process of mustering enough energy to send a bolt toward the snapper.

"Rediero. The echo is in the courtyard."

The slow talon-clicking downstairs stopped, abruptly. It was followed by rapid running steps and a crystalline ring that indicated Rediero's glass spear had been snatched off the wall. The snapper raised its head, and a glint of rose met her gaze. It would have a natural resistance to her arcane magic...she hissed out a curse, and directed the energy toward a shaky shield around the echo. It initially appeared three feet to the echo's right, and her claw shook with the effort of melding it around the hatchling-shaped echo.

Many things happened in the next moment. The snapper noticed the echo and turned towards it with open jaws. Rediero arrived in the courtyard and sprang forward, shafts of light flashing off the spear aimed at its flank, just as it shattered the shield with one bite and closed its jaws on the echo.

A magenta flash forked up the spear, which had glanced off one of the snapper's plates, and threw Rediero back. Virus felt the brief surge of arcane energy, and snatched at it greedily, drawing much of it into orbit around her. Rediero landed in a heap against one wall, smoldering and smelling faintly of aether. Completely unbothered, the snapper lifted the echo by its scruff and set it down some feet away.

"Mind where you step, little one..."

Even Rediero, slightly charred and staggering to her feet, managed to gasp. Warped rarely had the capacity for speech, much less coherent statements. Virus threw caution to the wind and leapt out the window, managing to glide over to Rediero and cast several healing runes.

"Who are you? What are you?" Rediero snapped at it with eyes dull with pain but teeth bared in a threat.

Each of its eyes blinked, slightly out of sync, and it canted its head. Multifaceted eyes glinted in a face as tranquil as the robust shield of arcane energy around its body, undisturbed by so much as a ripple.

"We are who we are, and we are here to do what we will. But we are not one of Its children, and we hold no love for them."

Before Rediero or Virus could protest or move to stop it, it-they stomped one mighty foot at a certain spot that they had been worrying at, and Virus felt Rediero hiss a pained gasp as almost half of the abbey's well of elemental energy was consumed in that moment. The thing that materialized in the courtyard was all angles and edges and cracks spilling light, and it hurt her eyes to look directly at. A beacon. The two had tried to construct one for weeks before realizing that neither could channel the amount of power needed to set it alight. Rediero doubled over and even Virus clutched her chest, gasping at what had to be only a shallow echo of Rediero's pain, as the two felt Its furious scrutiny in every warped head that turned towards the abbey, eyes narrowed at the beacon of defiance, a declaration of war against the now-seething Heart.

"What...what have you done?"

That impassive boulder of a face cracked into a smile, tugging the plates around their face into a grotesque rictus of approval. The snapper's shield flickered and died as the abbey's reserves swelled and spilled over: not merely with the snapper's arcane tang, but hints of cloying plague and rich earth, even a strand of Rediero's bittersweet light from her earlier attack. Virus understood. Their gullet was filled not with dirt and scrap, but elemental energy gathered from the meager ley lines across the Other. As the crude stealth and protection wards that they had set up earlier swelled in strength, the warped outside craned their heads as they lost sight of the abbey, gradually lost interest, and dispersed.

"We offer you a chance. Not just to hide and survive, but to fight. To resist. Perhaps even...succeed."

Watching the snapper, whose silhouette stood stolid and imposing against a shield stronger than it had been in months, Virus could almost believe them.
