◆ Caliburn - The Sword ◆

"If then... So be it."

Those with oracular powers are hailed as individuals with the clearest sight, able to perceive the future indefinitely. But Caliburn’s abilities are void, for he saw only one vision before losing his foresight eternally. To the present, no one knows what Caliburn saw on that fateful day. All anyone can recall is seeing the young dragon approaching the altar of the goddess’ temple to pray when he was struck with a blinding light that granted him a vision for the first and last time.

While Caliburn’s accident may be regarded as a miracle by outsiders, to lose one’s foresight was to lose one’s identity in the oracular community. By becoming spiritually blinded, Caliburn lost any chance of remaining in his clan and was sent to another temple to train as a guard. Caliburn offered no resistance to this banishment, working persistently until he had earned the recognition of the temple. Though his oracular sight was lost and his physical sight damaged by the holy light, he proved himself to be a formidable fighter regardless. Within mere months of his training, he had risen through the ranks and was in line to become the next captain of the squad.

But perhaps because Caliburn knew what would inevitably happen next, he refused the position when it was offered, stating in his quiet way that he would soon be unfit for it. True to his words, the temple was attacked by raiders looking to loot the temple’s offerings days after. Though the guards fought valiantly, powerful mercenaries that overwhelmed the vanguard. Caliburn led the secondary charge to repel the attack and ended up receiving a direct hit from a spell to his heart. The magical strike was from a nature mage, who planted a cursed seed in his heart that caused thorny vines to erupt from his body, felling him instantly.

Caliburn’s comrades rushed for help, but there seemed to be no hope as the vines tightened around his body and drank his blood. It was only a passing group from a nearby clan that saved him; they had seen the fight in the distance and joined the fray after Caliburn fell. Among them was a skilled healer capable of suppressing the contagion, saving Caliburn’s life after an intensive surgery. Upon recovering, Caliburn pledged allegiance to the clan and left the temple with the group of ambassadors. After proving himself to the rest of the clan, he joined the Solstice Clan, where he has stayed ever since.

Though Caliburn is one of the four main guards, his unpredictability and mysterious aura makes him one of the most isolated individuals in the clan. None would deny his loyalty, but he is so distant his clanmates find it difficult to trust him. In addition, Caliburn is indifferent and straightforward, speaking the truth regardless of who it hurts. Some say it is his vision that influenced him to be like this; after all, if he knows his own future, then perhaps he sees it fit no one else is spared from reality either. He acts in the same manner when carrying out his duties, completing everything without fail. It is almost as if he is a tool, a blade whose sole existence is to finish all it is tasked with until it shatters.

And shatter it one day will. Caliburn’s injury may have been slowed, but it will never heal. The thorns from the corrosive spell continue wrapping around him, feeding on his essence and hollowing him out from the inside. It takes everything the most experienced healers in the clan have to contain the corruption, but one healer has admittedly that inevitably – unless by some miracle the seed in his heart is removed – Caliburn would succumb. Caliburn knows this, of course. But like his attitude towards all else, he merely nodded at the news and said “what comes to be will come to be.”

Perhaps it is the greatest irony that white roses would bloom where the thorns grow, entangling him in their everlasting embrace. What should’ve symbolized purity and innocence are Caliburn’s chains, keeping him close to the promise of death and restraining him from achieving freedom. Yet despite all the pain they have caused him, the white roses aren’t chains to Caliburn – just the promise he saw in his vision. He is the goddess’ sword, the knight of the white rose. By his blade her will shall be done, no matter the cost to his soul.
