Scarab is the clan’s sorceress, and an extremely powerful one, at that. Growing up, the dragoness was always the runt, the smallest and weakest of her family. Relentlessly bullied for her petite size and clumsiness when hunting, she quickly grew bitter, internalising her hatred until she could bear it no longer. Scarab fled to the depths of the forest, where she stumbled upon a run down witch’s den, overgrown with vines and reclaimed by nature. To her surprise, the dragon who inhabited it took her in, stating calmly that she had been waiting many years for Scarab to arrive.

It was here that Scarab learned the ways of magic. Through pain, exhaustion, and brutal trials that left the young dragon almost dead, her powers grew. The witch, Nox, was kindly towards her, but had little sympathy for the toll her lessons took on Scarab. “Through pain, you will grow,” Scarab was told. “Through pain, you will grow.”

Soon it became clear that Scarab’s abilities no longer required Nox’s help- in fact, it became the other way around. Scarab’s talent for manipulating ancient, unspoken magic proved invaluable at protecting their den, and she would spend days at a time laying traps of ancient runes, and curses to befall anyone who crossed the pair.

One night, Nox grew frustrated- Scarab was fixated on perfecting a particularly lethal curse, mumbling it over and over, and it was clear she had not slept in days. Attempting to grasp Scarab’s tail to tug her back into the den, Scarab snapped- a writhing ball of violent energy exploded from the pearlcatcher’s mouth, striking Nox with such force, the trees around them tore up from the ground. Nox was dead before she hit the ground.

Horrified at what she’d done, Scarab flew into a panic, destroying the den with flash after flash of magic, her grieving wails echoing long into the night. The morning after, she buried Nox, leaving one of her lanterns on the grave.

Scarab has never spoken a word of what happened that night, though it haunts her every waking moment. The pearlcatcher has vowed to honour Nox’s teachings, and keep her powers under tight control. As the sorceress of Darkwood, she feels the burden of this responsibility, along with her guilt, keeps the wild magic inside her in line. She still mourns Nox, and is wary of curses, but she is content in new role, at last believing she is enough just the way she is.
