ecwibPi.png BRIEF HISTORY

She was born into a small, superstitious clan on the border of The Shifting Expanse. The moment she hatched, her parents knew something wasn't right. Even though her plumage was the brightest of her siblings, she was the least active. She never chirped, hummed or whistled like the rest of the hatchlings. Fearing for the rest of their clutch, her parents abandoned her one night and she never saw them again.

She wandered from clan to clan, but no-one on the Expanse would take in a mute hatchling. Desperate for a home and exhausted, she began to look outside the borders for a place to call her own. By a stroke of luck, she was found one day, near death, by Raven, who was on a scouting mission at the time. She brought her back to the Foxfire Caverns were she was welcomed into their ranks with open wings. Adopted by Raven, she was taught to work with jewels and metals in the Foxfire Forges, eventually earning her the name Copper.

She finds comfort in late-night work in the forges and the companionship of her clever familiar Flynn.

THE CHOSEN ONE

I woke to the soft sound of claws ticking on the hard stone floors of my sleeping chambers. Sure enough, a moment later Mother poked her head around the door.
"Good, you're awake. Come child. It is time you were shown something."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and headed away from the chamber. Yawning, I jumped up to follow her. We trotted quietly down the hall and into the main cavern. It was a giant space, hollowed out from eons of erosion. Many halls twisted off from it, each one leading to a different room or chamber, and each one following their own little stream. The Caverns were expansive and it was impossible to explore every one of them.

Slowly, we came to a stop. Mother tapped me with her tail, telling me to stay put. She began to walk forward counting her steps as she went, and eventually stopped at a blank wall between two halls. She ran a talon over the wall and muttered something under her breath. Then, slowly, carefully, she began to engrave a symbol into the stone. When she finished she stepped away and let out a breath I hadn't realized she'd been holding. For a moment nothing seemed to happen. Then, suddenly from somewhere underneath us a mechanism rumbled and an opening slowly appeared before Mother. She turned to me and waved me forward. The passage we entered was one I had never seen before. The walls were perfectly smooth and veined with a metal that shimmered with the light of the foxfire mushrooms lining the sides of the walkway. We slowly walked down the hallway, the only sound the clicking of our claws. As we went along, the corridor started to slope slowly downwards and it began to feel hotter and hotter.

I clicked my claws on the stone in a language only we could understand, "W-where are we going? Mother?" Suddenly, she stopped and turned to me.
"Now. I need you to listen to me very carefully child. What you are about to see is for our eyes and our eyes only. This chamber is an ancient place, imbued with an ancient magic," She seemed to get lost in thought as she ran a claw over the veined metal running through the wall. "My mother and her mother before her and every female before them has been brought here but... I have not been in a long time..." She shook herself out of her daze "But that doesn't matter. Come. We are nearly there."

We continued down the hall, our pace getting quicker and quicker, and my feathers shivering with anticipation. Soon enough we slowed as we entered a giant chamber, almost twice as big as the main entrance. A bubbling river ran around the sides of the chamber and poured over the edge of a canyon in a cascading waterfall. Lining the walls were gilded stands and cases made for amour, jewels and charms. And right in the center of the chamber, with a staircase leading up and the river circling the platform, a giant, purple fire burned inside of a golden forge. Mesmerized, almost compelled by the flickering flame, I stepped forward and started up the stairs. As I reached the forge, I saw three pedestals standing in front of it. Slowly I approached them and as I did, I saw a shimmering object on each. Unsure what I should do, I turned back to Mother and tapped out a question to her. In return she only nodded. I turned back to the pedestals.

On the left, a shimmering sapphire sat on a red velvet cushion. In the middle, a shining piece of copper glimmered in the firelight. and to the right, a star-shaped pendant was coiled around a golden sphere. I knew this was a choice, one that would affect me forever. I took a deep breath to steady myself. For some reason, I seemed drawn to the shining piece of metal. Carefully I reached out a paw and grasped the square in my talons. I waited for something to happen, but nothing felt any different so I dropped it gently into the purple flame. Suddenly, a clear, high note rang throughout the chamber and the ground began to rumble. I stumbled back in surprise and tripped down the stairs back to Mother.
"Wha-what happened?" I tapped.
For a moment, she didn't say anything, only stared around the chamber as it fell silent again. Then, she looked down at me.
"The Foxlight Forge has accepted it's new blacksmith."
"It...it has?"
"Yes, my child. It chose Copper. It chose you."
