The sun had long retreated beneath the horizon, leaving a moonless night to impose itself over the barren terrain which Seb found himself to be surrounded by. The eerie, deathly silence engulfed him, and he relished in the moment. The air was cold. Still. It was too rare that he found moments like these. But this moment, in all its splendor, could do nothing to erase the gnawing tension rising amid his chest. He felt an unnerving sense of being watched. It was as if someone were watching him from every direction at once, hiding among the glacial outcroppings or the floes of ice in the nearby seawater, but he couldn't tell who it was. As much as he wanted to, he couldn't.

If they knew where he was, they'd have killed him. He was only sure of that much. And yet, there seemed no way that anyone could know what he was, what he was capable of, and even if they did know, he'd never let the secret of his heritage escape into the ears of a stray scavenger looking for an easy attack in the Southern Icefields.

He'd been in this situation before, back when he was a young passenger on the ship that carried him to this desolate land all those years ago. He had heard whispers about an ancient evil lurking there, one whose powers would only be known by those with the same blood running through their veins. Seb had visited cobweb laden libraries and the lairs of obscure book collectors in his past- he was no stranger to who he was descended of.

Which is why it was naught but reflex when he easily took down the Mirror assassin that had been lying in wait behind a nearby snowdrift. This was simple for him. It had all melded into a grey, indiscernible blur as he aged. Fighting for survival, learning of what exactly lurked in his family’s past, the shock had worn off long ago. It had been replaced with fascination. He no longer felt guilt when he eliminated threats to his life, but instead he was filled with a morbid curiosity. Where did they go after their demise? Would these countless battles come to haunt him in the afterlife? It intrigued him greatly.

The calls of his sakura-pink owl, echoing across the frozen fields, broke him from his chain of thought. Glancing in the direction from where the sound originated, he noticed his beloved familiar sitting at the mouth of a cavern made of dark stone, glimmering with the occasional patch of ice. And then the owl lifted its body into the deep dark of the hollow.

Seb, who was now concerned for the well-being of his owl, followed suit into the cave. For a good stretch of cavern, the light was fading, the air was freezing, and Seb was only guided by the occasional call of his owl, which echoed through the cavern's depths. As darkness fell, the owl stopped calling. He could see no more than an inch ahead on either side. The sound became fainter and fainter, until finally all that remained were the echoes of his own footsteps against the cold rock. The sound carried far enough to be heard in the cavern’s mouth, if one were to be standing outside as he traversed the sightless terrain. But then came silence. And not long after that, he began to hear strange noises coming from a stretch of cavern that laid ahead of him. As if someone were scraping against rock. The occasional flap of wings. A cautious hoot from his beloved owl. But what could this mean? He didn't know how big the cave was, but surely if another dragon had been inside the cave with him, he would have heard it long prior to arriving at this point. And then he heard her.

A voice came out of nowhere that sounded as if it had been lifted from another world. It was not like a dragon’s speech at all.

"Seb."

Her voice carried the accent of an ancient tongue so foreign to him that he could likely never learn to comprehend it. Her words were spoken very slowly yet they seemed like poetry. A pink glow suddenly illuminated the cavern ahead of him, revealing that he was, indeed, not alone. His owl appeared from the darkness behind the dragon who was now engulfed by a pink aura, flying to his shoulder and cooing gently. Still, his focus was locked on the one who stood before him.

Azure wings that reminded him of the dark ocean he had crossed to reach this frozen territory all those years ago. White scales that gleamed in the pale pink light, a sharp contrast to the darkness surrounding them both. He could easily toss away the small Fae if he deemed her enough of a threat, but something was keeping him held in place. He could have sworn that he saw her flicker as if she were the flame attached to a candlewick.

This wasn’t real. This wasn’t happening. He had heard the tales, and read the books detailing his family’s history over and over. And yet.. he doubted. Why would She come to him?

She looked up at him, smiling shyly.

“S̵͗̔e̷̍̚b̶̏̚.̵̈́͘.̴͂̋”

Her smile was a front, he convinced himself.

But the last thing She wanted right now were his doubts, and Her eyes told him they weren’t going anywhere until he spoke to Her. Steeling himself, he stood his ground.

“What do you want from me.” His voice was a little gruff, but it sounded like he knew what he had to do. And he hoped that it would be enough to convince Her.

“I’m not asking for anything in particular. I just need your help.”

Seb could barely believe his ears. “You require.. my help? But why?”

“I need to gain ù̵̑n̴̊͑d̸͐̉e̷̒̆r̵̐̐s̵̛̅t̴̿̒å̵̂n̴͌͝d̴̈́͛ḯ̸͒n̴͆̆g̴̽͠.”

“Of what?”

“A topic you find yourself to be obsessed with.” The pupils of her eyes dilated sharply. “You know ĕ̷̾x̵̽̇a̵͛̕c̴̎̓t̴̛̐l̸͐̍y̷̓̒ what I am asking of you.”

Seb’s heart was beating frantically against his rib cage. Every fibre in his body screamed, begged him to run, but yet he remained frozen. Continuing to build up the false impression that he was composed.

“And how am I to teach you?”
The fae’s expression was one of unbreakable calm. “Come, with me. You may join my s̷̋̕c̵̃̍h̴̀̽o̶̓̉l̴̛̾a̴͑͆r̷͛ͅs̸͒͠ for a time, and then you will be returned back to this cave. Your familiar may attend you on this journey.”

“... How long will I be gone?”

“As long as it takes, my child.”

“And you can ensure that I will remain safe for the duration of my stay in your.. realm?”

She grinned, which sent Seb’s anxieties skyrocketing.

“I will keep you safe, my child. Close your eyes and we shall begin.”

He made eye contact with his owl, still perched on his shoulder, who seemed to be completely unfazed. The old sailors were right. Her powers were only known by those with the same very same blood running through their veins. Seb surrendered and knelt before the Glitch Queen, bowing his head to her level.

“You have my trust. Let us begin.”

The eyes of Naomi brightened.

“Yes. Let us begin.”
