Is a hired guard and workman for Sommar - the guild has him magically branded so that he's easier to control/keep tabs on back at the guild etc, basically something akin to a slave. Sommar has him hired for long trips so that they can search for someone to remove the magic

Had his tongue cut out by the guild, so he now communicates through sign language taught to him by sommar
