Sweetstep, Part 1, Volume I
Made with love.

~

The pastel Skydancer hummed merrily as she looked at herself in the mirror while she polished her copper necklace. Clipping it around her slender neck, Sweetstep adjusted the jewellery so the green gem was directly in the middle. When knocking sounded at the door, she paused.

“I'll be right there!” her melodious voice rang out. Sweetstep took a moment to run yellow claws through the pink feathers on her head before turning to open the door and see the two dragons waiting to be let in.

“So glad you could come!” beamed Sweetstep.

“As are we, right Dewlap?”

“Ecstatic.”

“Please have a seat,” said Sweetstep as Rocky and Dewlap followed her inside, and each dragon sat in their own frilled chair. “I've heard all about how you've saved dear Rocky's life, Dewlap. Did you just happen to be nearby when that awful storm hit?”

Dewlap remained silent for several seconds. Sweetstep tried to meet his eyes but he kept his averted from hers, and she thought she could feel his emotions...or tried to, they were distorted. Was he trying to hide them? A smile slowly creeped along her face when the Nocturne finally responded.

“Well, yes. At the time, I'd been journeying through each region on my travels when Rocky had foolishly wandered from his siblings.”

Rocky's grin widened. “He knows I'm grateful.”

Sweetstep kept her full attention on Dewlap. “You must've been so brave to have flown straight through to save him.” She then felt a hint of embarrassment flicker from him, though it was brief.

“Oh he was!” exclaimed Rocky. “He flew through driving rain and roaring wind just for me.”

Sweetstep felt the amusement emanating from the young Mirror, and she furrowed her brow. “Oh don't tease, Rockpools. Is that how you thank the drake who's saved you?”

Rocky widened his four blue eyes and his smile melted, saying nothing more.

“Oh I almost forgot!” Sweetstep leaped to her feet. “I have some tea and biscuits made, if you boys would like some.”

“Please,” Rocky said, nudging Dewlap.

“Sounds lovely.”

Another emotion wavered through the Nocturne, but Sweetstep couldn't make it out. She shrugged and smiled, figuring it to be his magic obscuring his feelings. The pastel Skydancer turned to retrieve the treats. She reached for the unfortunate cyan-eyed fly she'd stunned earlier, and set it on one of the flower painted plates, facing the side with the fly towards herself as she handed it to Dewlap and the other to Rocky. When Sweetstep spun around to fetch the tea, she heard Dewlap yelp in pain. Returning with cups of tea in both paws, she saw the Nocturne reach for the back of his neck.

“Dear me! What happened, Dewlap?” Sweetstep asked. And just like that, Dewlap's panic shone like a beacon to her as she set down the tea on coasters.

Dewlap's paw quickly flew back down. “Just a travel pain, I'm sure,” he laughed nervously. Taking a small bite with the dainty fork, he chewed and swallowed slowly. His eyes widened and he looked down. “Wow, that is...sweet. Really, it's almost too good to finish.”

Sweetstep turned to Rocky, who was still staring at the spot where Dewlap's paw had been. “And what do you think, Rocky?”

Her question jerked the young Mirror back to the present. Taking a hasty bite, Rocky closed his four blue eyes as he chewed. “All I can taste...is love,” he smiled in Dewlap's direction, and in response the Nocturne choked.

“Oh I'm glad you think so,” Sweetstep beamed. “I made it especially for you.”

“I can tell,” said Rocky, taking a larger bite.

“So Dewlap, how long are you planning on staying with m—us?”

Dewlap swallowed. “Ohhh I haven't quite figured it all out yet.” He stiffly stretched before continuing. “I've spent most of my time out flying, but I think a few days here to rest might be great.”

“Only a few days?” Sweetstep pouted. “It's too bad you can't stay longer.”

Suddenly Dewlap lurched forward, almost leaping out of his seat before he stopped himself, his panic once again flooding Sweetstep's senses.

Rocky looked over at the Nocturne, whose eyes were shut tight as he seemed to strain. “Dewlap are you okay?” he asked, worry sounded in his voice.

“I'm sure it's just more travel pains,” Sweetstep said quickly. “He did mention spending quite a lot of his time flying.”

Dewlap then inhaled deeply and released a slow exhale, and Sweetstep felt him become strangely calm, his emotions hidden from her again.

“Just fine,” Dewlap said as he forced a smile and he carefully placed his plate on the table before him.

Before anydrake could say anything more, a red and gold Fae stuck her head in the doorway. “You guys have to see this!” she exclaimed before darting away.

Rocky was the first to get up. “I don't know about you, but I'm gonna go see what's gotten Bryony all wound up. Must be good.” He looked over his shoulder to Dewlap and Sweetstep when he reached the doorway. “And so she doesn't come back and yell at us again.” The Mirror was then gone.

Dewlap stiffened and then slunk from his seat to follow him, but he suddenly stopped in the middle of the room, unable to move his feet. The tip of his white tail twitched back and forth, and his back straightened as he stood up on his hind legs. He widened his eyes when one of his arms stretched out to the side and the other across his chest.

Sweetstep's pink eyes shone and her smile spread. “Oh Dewlap, were you saving a dance just for little old me?”

Dewlap kinked his tail and scrunched up his face, closing his eyes as his legs moved him towards the Skydancer, taking her from her seat.

Sweetstep let out a short squeal. “Oh don't be shy, there's no need to hide your feelings from me.” Placing one yellow paw on Dewlap's white shoulder, she almost flinched at the heat rising from his body. “You're just so hot,” she giggled.

“You did this,” Dewlap accused her as they spun dizzily around the room.

“I have no idea what you mean,” she replied innocently. Well, since he knew, she decided to come clean. “But what does it matter? Fever flies bite dragons all the time. Are we going to let that fact ruin our time together?”

“Forcing it kinda does,” Dewlap pointed out as his body jerked, bumping into various furniture and nearly knocking breakables off the shelves.

“Oh don't be so grumpy,” Sweetstep cooed. “A couple of old drakes like us should have some fun once in a while. Let us enjoy each other's company...as our dance takes us away...and we look deeply into each other's eyes...”

“All right, that's it!” Dewlap exploded and ripped himself from Sweetstep's grip.

After the two dragons broke apart, Sweetstep's smile vanished as a furious wind blew around the entire room, lifting up the chairs and tables, flinging open drawers and cupboards, sending cups and plates and cutlery flying as they encircled her and Dewlap. Sweetstep felt nothing but pure anger coming from the other dragon before her.

Madam, it would seem as though Rocky wasn't the only foolish drake around here,” the Nocturne snarled. “I didn't decide to become a part of this clan, no matter how short my stay, just to have my actions controlled by one so desperate for attention.” He then stopped, as did the objects that surrounded him. With a flick of his wrist, everything was placed back where they'd flown from.

Sweetstep's eyes were left wide open. She didn't know what to say.

“Now,” Dewlap said as he allowed a smile to spread across his pale face, “I think I'll walk off these travel pains and see where Rocky went.” He swung himself around and headed for the door, leaving the shocked Skydancer alone.

Sweetstep remained silent for several moments before finding her voice. “Well that could've gone better,” she grumbled. The Skydancer turned and passed the mirror, only to pause and look at her reflection, and shrieked at the sight of her ruffled feathers.
