Amabí was raised by Imperial artisans in a traditional Archeian villa. He was separated from his real parents as an egg, when a scandal forced them to flee the town.
In order to break their son's infatuation with his own identity before it could form, he was firmly disciplined as an adolescent and subjected to pedantic tasks such as balancing porcelain tea trays when they left the kiln. He came to appreciate these exercises as a learning experience, for his foster parents used these opportunities to teach him philosophy and knowledge of the trade.
Yet the frightening irony of beautiful things is that the more they are suppressed, the more beautiful they become. Even when dressed in the garb of peasants and humble apprentices, he is said to have a handsomeness only bolstered by the sharp contrast. And he is privately quite proud of his own meekness-- which he takes as a sign that he is succeeding in the task of being humble and rejecting the ego-- but keeps this to himself for fear of punishment.
He once isolated himself from his pearl, thinking that it might free him of those proud impulses, but soon discovered the horror of his vacant, perfunctory existence in that state of suspension. It felt as if all the physical world were a white noise, as though his conscience were in a black box removed from his body. Though he does not anthropomorphize the pearl as an extension of himself, he cannot leave home without it, for which he feels some guilt; he needs the physical sensation of curling around it to relieve acute stress.
When he was old enough to take up a craft, Amabí was apprenticed and instructed to create ceramic masks of Imperials, which were traditional in the Ritual of Lost Memories (Cazarel ceremony for the deceased). The vague, distorted reflection of his own face on that of a smiling Imperial imprinted deeply in the young dragon's mind. It impressed in him the unattainability of his expectations; how distant he was from ever being an Imperial like his adoptive family expected him to be.
