Lore
“Dear Shadow,
“Wow, I can—”
“What are you doing, little one?”
The tiny green spiral jerked her head around, to see a male pearlcatcher coming toward her.
“Uh, well, I...uh, I thought I would look and find my ancestors, and I found this one, his name is Shadow, and he’s scattered himself so many times and made himself look so cool and different every time, and it’s wild and I thought that it would be cool if I wrote a letter to my relatives and gave them a present, so I’m writing a letter to him so that he knows that his line still goes on and he started out as a spiral, just like me, and now he’s a banescale!” All this was let out in one breath, and was ended with huff.
She thrust the letter in the pearlcatcher’s face, proudly displaying her misspellings and inkblots.
He smiled. “It looks lovely.” He lowered himself to where he was laying beside the spiral, who was so excited she was curling and uncurling herself. “What’s your name? You’re new around here, aren’t you?”
She nodded so rapidly he could nearly hear her brain pounding against her skull. “I’m new to everything! See, I’m still a hatchling, but I’ll be grown up soon enough.”
He laughed in amusement. “Don’t be in a rush to grow up.”
She tilted her head to the side in confusion. “I’m not in a rush, goofball. I just know I’m gonna grow up!”
“Unfortunately, growing up is inevitable.”
“Nuh uh, there’s a thingy you can buy to make yourself be little forrrrrever. Do you want one?”
He laughed. “No, I don’t. Even if you look young forever, your mind will still age.”
The tip of her tail twitched. “Oh well. I’ll live.”
“I have never laughed so much in my entire life,” the pearlcatcher told her.
“Wow, you must be boring.”
“Ouch.”
Katie’s already big eyes widened. “Oh no, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.” She wrapped herself around his neck in a hug, but let go too soon, and fell on his pearl.
She stared at it, watching her yellow-eyed reflection blink back at her in its sheen.
“You didn’t, not really. My name is Seeker.”
“Seeker’s a nice name, I like your pearl.”
“Thank you.”
“How can I get a pearl?”
“Well…” he began uncomfortably, “You have to be a pearlcatcher. There are scrolls that can change you into a pearlcatcher, but—”
“Oh yeah, I know about those. I don’t wanna be a pearlcatcher, I just want a pearl. Can I buy a pearl?”
“No, not from a pearlcatcher.”
The tiny dragon huffed. “But why?”
“Our pearls are the very essence of who we are. Without our pearls, other pearlcatchers hate us, and...I’ve heard that many who lose or sell their pearl lose their minds.”
Katie’s eyes grew wide. “I didn’t know that. Do you know other things that I don’t know?”
“Well, given that I’m so much older than you, and that I’ve been studying since my youth, it can be argued that I know many things you don’t.”
Katie thought this over. Seeker sounded fascinating. A world of information must live in his mind, and she realized exactly how hungry her mind was for knowledge, wisdom, and information. More so than her stomach was hungry for zeebaburger, and...well...she was always hungry for a good zeebaburger. “Hmm. You sound smart. Teach me!”
“What?”
“I wanna learn. Your brain is big. You have lots of stuff inside of your brain, and I wanna learn some, too.”
“Where shall we start?”
“Tell me...tell me about you.”
So, Seeker sat with her, as she twirled and spiraled around him, telling the small hatchling about how he first discovered a book, and from within the book learned more knowledge than he’d ever known existed...and that knowledge only birthed the unquenchable hunger he now had for more knowledge. “Mostly all I do is read, and learn, and observe. I don’t go out of my way to interact with others...but you were writing, and I was intrigued.”
Katie wound herself around his face horn. “Wow! Tell me more things!”
“What kind of things? I know too many things to just...pick a random thing to tell.”
“Uhh, tell me about the lair!”
“Oh, about our lair?”
“Yeah! The lair and the clan, and alllll the dragons!”
“That could take some time….”
She shot up in the air turning circles in the sky. “I have lots of time!”
Seeker laughed, alright, here goes.
“Have you met DarkFire and Dusk?”
“Uhh, I haven’t really met a lot of other dragons, actually...but...aren’t they,” she lowered her voice to a whisper, “outcasts?”
Seeker narrowed his eyes. “Do you allow titles and clan roles to determine how you feel about others?”
Katie paused for a moment, thinking over the question. “I don’t know. I’m still very young, and I’m figuring out my own...principles.”
Seeker nodded a short nod of understanding. “How do you think of me?”
“You’re smart, and wise, and know a lot.”
“And do you trust my wisdom?”
She nodded her entire body vigorously.
“Do not allow titles, clan roles, and what dragons say about each other to be the deciding factor in how you feel about them. Talk to them, and learn for yourself how you feel. Do you understand me? Yes, listen to the wisdom of others, and use caution when approaching strangers...but decide for yourself your own opinion of others. Understand?”
Katie nodded. “I want to know about DarkFire and Dusk.”
“DarkFire and Dusk are the founders of our clan and lair. We used to be a fire clan.”
Katie’s yellow eyes grew wider. “I didn’t realize that….”
Seeker smiled. “Many of the newer members to our clan don’t. Monarch decided that due to his name, he was meant to be the king. So...he gave DarkFire and Dusk the choice to go quietly, become the lowest of the low...or he would take the clan by force and send them and their sympathizers as unwilling fighters for the Tidelord. They chose to protect their people.”
He went on, explaining things in more detail.
“I think DarkFire and Dusk should be the leaders again….”
“I agree. But shh, we’re not to talk of it. There are too many neutral aligned dragons, who may have loose lips. Most of all, we must be cautious around Dissension.”
“Why?”
“She hates any dragon who is not a water dragon...she is not a kind dragon. Do not simply take my word for it, but observe her for yourself. But, heed my wisdom and keep your lips quiet in her presence.”
Katie nodded solemnly, then began zinging through the air. “I can’t be still anymore! OH! And I need to finish my letter!”
Seeker smiled. “I would love to be your teacher. You are a little sponge.”
“I am not a sponge, I am a spiral.”
“Right, of course, how silly of me.”
“I need a teacher. There’s lots of things I don’t know. How do you spell genealogy?”
“How about I help you with your letter?”
“Yay!”
“And...when you grow older, would you care to write the biography for our own clan? It’s in dire need of an update.”
“Yes! I am happy to be helpful!”
Seeker helped Katie to finish writing a letter to her many greats grandfather, then in the days to come poured into her all of the knowledge he had to share.
