The banescale scanned the open expanse. It was barren. Nothing grew here, just the piles of long dead dragons. She was used to this life, having to watch her step to not get caught in a toxic sinkhole. This was her home, the place she grew up and formed memories, but she didn’t want to stay here forever. She wanted to explore all that Sornieth had to offer. She dreamed of the verdant expanse of the Viridian Labyrinth, the snow-covered pines of the Southern Icefield, and most of all, the ever-bright lava streams of the Ashfall Waste. She’s wandered out of her homeland a few times, but that’s only been to neighboring territories. Today, today will be different.

She walked to the southeastern boarder and overlooked the crystal waters. Wisps of poisonous gas rolled gently into the sea, disappearing into the waves. She took a deep breath of the fresh air, appreciating the slightly salty taste. She would head out here. Stretching her wings, she jumped off the edge, free falling for a few seconds before catching a draft. She let the wind guide her. The ocean biome was blooming with life below her. Folding her wings in, she let herself fall lower to the rippling waters. Brightly colored coral and fish swam below her, a few jumping out, sending mist onto her scales. She smiled. This was what she craves. Coming to the end of the lake, she saw something glow up ahead. If she was correct, she should be close to the Ashfall Waste.

Maras’ eyes lit up, in part from excitement and in part from the reflection of the magma. She landed next to the river, walking closer to get a better look.
“I wouldn’t do that,” a voice behind her said.

She looked around and saw a male banescale a few meters away. He was laying down, studying her.

“You’re not from around here, are you?” he commented.

“And what makes you say that?” she questioned, walking a little closer to the stranger.

“Everyone here knows that the rivers could bubble and spurt magma around the edge.”

She looked back at where she was standing. She didn’t notice the burnt earth around the banks until she got further away. “Well, I’m glad you were here.”

The male chuckled and walked up to the female, “Name’s Firnen.”

“Maras,” the female said. Maybe this would be where she would stay for a while. Besides, she has someone to show her around now.
