Biography
V A L L E N
⎯⎯⎯ teacher ⎯⎯⎯
℘ursuing knowledge is a virtue, hoarding it is vice.
It's a quote from his teacher that lives with Vallen every day, centering his place here in the Icefield. While Vallen is an Icefield dragon born and bred, he feels a disconnect with the culture of it. The fringes of the Flight are not at all like the Fortress city center. Things are wild here. There is much that is untamed: the places as well as the people.
Dragons like him and Markov are almost rarities. They are city dragons, from the scholar houses instead of the prisons. They collected books instead of bones. They argue instead of fight. They study instead of snap their jaws. They have the same view on the ways of border dragons. While almost naturally imbued with a love of relics, Ice dragons do not tend to learn much from them, instead keeping religiously to the tenet of preserving them as they are. Vallen and Markov are both knowledge-seekers, Light-like in their inqusition. They do not take to religion well - and especially not the fanaticism of Mateja's devotion to their Warden.
(Vernyy is well aware of this. He has threatened Vallen multiple times.)
Despite his feelings about the place, Vallen realizes that circumstances on the borders are different. There is not much opportunity to study when time is precious and temperatures plunge. That and his teacher's quote in mind led him here years ago to spread true knowledge among the more destitute regions of the Icefield. Bonerattle Point is close to the Arcane Isles, close to many of the wider parts of the world, but the religious fervor and divine 'mandate' of the clan have closed off the schools of thought that would have otherwise entered. Vallen must walk a fine line between what he feels they must know and what Mateja feels is appropriate to teach instead of fighting.
His mate Lepa has helped him integrate into the clan smoothly, and beyond his love for her he feels she has helped him more clearly understand the world around him. Her perspective as a dragon born in this clan, on the fringes, in the wild, make his sympathy overpower the bitterer parts of what he deems logic.
Vallen is a teacher for the clan's hatchlings. He imparts what he can, and hopes desperately it is enough to cultivate something more for them.
