Winged Science
You never know what the future holds for you in its cold limbs.

Back in the day, in the womb of droughty land of the Shifting Expanse, the affairs of audacious, liberty-loving scientific dragon will were managed by the Multimagnetic Rumble, the sparklest wits of the expanse full of electric field. They probably every single quality which could be used to describe the big head of science: hard-hitting faddishness, flexible thinking, ambitiousness, and wealth of experience and expertise in the field. Despite all that, they didn't bask in their success as inventors; the reward, well-deserved by the scientists, somehow kept coming to those who kowtowed to the Rumble's boss in the right way. The group's participants were these workhorses ready to toil like galley slaves for keep, but above everything else, for the idea that powered each and every one of them. It both kept them together and kept them apart.

"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!"

The sudden loud crackle accompanied by the blatant cryout of Neph, the tiny Fae dragon, broke the grim silence of the underground caves. Neph, of all dragons, never lacked enthusiasm. Even given all the monotonous speech of the dragons of his kind, he had plenty of conversations with Coatl dragons, managing to master their kind's language, and after that, he saw a lot of hyperactive Spiral dragons which taught him to hold conversations with expression, as well as with fluence and shortness. Thus, Neph's thoughts were flying out of his chest like arrows, released from tauten bowstring, strong enough to pierce not only the spot, but somehow also the soul, time and space.

Neph was truly astonished by what just happened. Taking off from his workcave like a shot from a gun, he rammed in with some kind of technology with gears of pure silver with occasional diamond notches into the main hall, where two other dragons of the Rumble were actively arguing about something.

"Hey, guys, guys, do you have even the slightest idea what is this?!" Neph was shaking of inspiration, leaving the construction on the wide worktable, just in case. "This is the basis, the stable bracing we were looking for so much time!"

The sitting dragons came out of their argument, hearing the rustle of scrolls and charts scattering to the winds after Neph's action. They came closer to the brought construction, starting to stare on it with unmistakably surprised looks.

"The silver harrier? The contents of keratosic diamonds is… half a percentage point per hundred units?!" Eglow, the Rumble's head, always sceptical and deep-thinking Ridgeback dragon, took the material in her hands. "We have never received such things, not in any package… How did you manage to obtain that?"

Neph glared in anticipation of yet another scientific triumph. He'd say a lot, but words were stuck in his throat from excitement, as well as from the amount of information. Ultimately, the necessary words were promptly chosen and said.

"Not 'obtain', Eglow, gather! Gather!" Fae seemed to have no plans to stop talking in the near future. "Imagine, one could just collect some threadbare local stalactites, crumbling them into dust in the cauldron, then scrape down some things from any running vulstal, add a bit of magnetite and…" Neph snapped his claws, expressly singing the next word. "A-a-alche-e-emy-y-y!~"

The slap on the limb of the dragon carried away by a conversation from a Bogsneak dragon named Gajiv forced Neph to suddenly come back to senses. Like all other engineers of the Spire, Gajiv detested magnetite with every fiber of his being.

"Shut your gob! As it wasn't enough talk about this… uhm… 'metal', but you also experiment with this abomination." Gajiv trembled even from a slight mention of this ore that was able to neutralize magnetic fields, so he muttered testily under his breath. "When I'll meet Baldwin next time, I'm definitely telling him a thing or two…"

"And this will be soon enough, no further than tomorrow. We need reagents anyways, and his students are too green to their job to guarantee its quality."

Saying these words indifferently, Eglow smiled sligtly. She truly liked her job, though, unlike Neph, she didn't enjoy playing on anything to popular effect. Dreaming to make significant scientific breakthrough, she made her way to a post of the Rumble's head for the sole purpose of making her dream come true. Anyhow, each project of her team brought her close to her treasured dream, despite the absence of any benefit she could get out of the Rumble's inventions: neither new knowledge, nor any professional challenge, or anything else of value.

"Leave this gimcrack to the hatchlings near the Spire, Neph." Eglow said like it was nothing. "What's the progress on the SYMBiONT project?"

Yes, probably, SYMBiONT can be called the most ambitious project ever created by the Rumble. It embodied the wildest dreams of lightning dragons: touching the part of their deity, hearing his call, voice, orders… Carrying them out faultlessly, receiving knowledge right from the Stormcatcher. It might seem that'll be nice for everyone, even the lab won't be needed to be destroyed in case of emergency... at least it seems like that. In order to fulfil such an audacious concept, Gajiv designed and kept constructing the two-walled capsule, whose inner casing was made of electrically conductive metal covered by amalgam, and the outer one was made of thick dielectric material. They were planned to keep a bit of distance from one another to make a place for the raging thunderings: according to the blueprint, one casing of a capsule was attached to another with a firm alloy of electrically conductive material and dielectric material to sustain both heats and earth-shattering voltages. The thick support was then to be welded to the movable pivot point made out of three spinning elliptic metallic rings that, for their part, were attached to the movable top part of the obsidian plinth, shaped as a massive dragon paw holding the construction on the ground with any spin intensity.

Neph was responsible for the capsule's inner principle of action, creating small dribbles, such as screws, gears, attachments, parts… In general, he was a mechanic, whose task was to breath life into the capsule, well designed by Gajiv. His success in doing that was remarkable, and, on top of it, counting in his small size, there was no one better than him of the Rumble's brigade for such a task. The rest of the brigade, however, were not too fond of the talented mechanic: his ideas often were out of norms and principles of engineering. By being the true fanatic of his craft and showing remarkable creative element in it, Neph achieved the right to participate in the most prestigious scientific team across the thundering expanse with ease.

To carry out the testing of SYMBiONT, it was decided to use the real dragon. As expected, Eglow volunteered for that, probably, to make the most out of the test for the sake of her endeavors. Like they say, there's nothing better than personal example to persuade those around you.

"The construction's ready, boss!" With these words, Gajiv turned his long neck to Eglow. "We checked it by centrifugal tests, seems to be holding together good. Atop of that, Neph crept all over it."

"Well, if Neph too…" Eglow was persuaded by Neph's tests of any kind of construction. She had first-hand knowledge about this Fae's hyperactivity, able to wreck havoc on any device if it's even slightly bad. "Tomorrow is the day we'll do a serious test of our invention. Be prepared for the morning. Ah, right, Neph…" Eglow hovered to Fae, indifferently snapped the next phrase before exitting the hall. "You must remove all the magnetite from the construction prior to the test. Hope you did understand me well, child."

Neph loved to experiment on magnetite. The words of exitting chief etched deep into his heart, provoking a grudge which he had a hard time to hide. Last time when he let his grudge go out, Neph was the only one suffering from that.

Following Eglow, Gajiv nodded to Neph.

"Do as she said."

Vexed and left alone, Neph hanged his head, spending the rest of the day inside the lab.

The stony silence dwelt in caves that night. It was only interrupted by the occasional falling drips of water, creeping down the sharp edges of stalactites. The halls seemed empty… but only on the first sight. Doing his best to make as little noise as he could, flapping his wings, Neph flied the caves, anticipating something long nurtured deep in his mind.

"You'll get sit, old bag… Think you can do anything? Think you know everything? Think you can offend the adepts of science and get away with it? I'll show you science… I'll teach you… You'll remember it for the rest of your life…"

Neph's thoughts changed one another lightning fast, but they were all common about one thing: to teach the offender a lesson.

Neph's claws were holding a scroll made out of hydrosoluble material with a shape of Ridgeback scribbled on it. Flying into the hall of experiments, he glued the scroll atop the nearby Nocturne breed change scroll, taking the real Ridgeback scroll away from the machine, hiding it among real Nocturne scrolls. He then inserted the fake scroll instead of the taken one.

Quietly flapping his wings, Neph smirked in satisfaction and flew away, back to his resting room, anticipating the next day.

"And now, smart heads, we are about to bring it to life. The grand experiment, destined to come down in history." Eglow enunciated, slowly clocking up to the capsule on foot. "The true synthesis of dragons and technologies, first in Sornieth. The SYMBiONT project at its finest!"

After saying these words, the ambitious dragon jumped into the capsule, stretching her wings around it.

"Turn it on, scatterbrains! Let the science loose!" She cried, closing the capsule.

The pulsating cracks transformed the hall of experiments into the true little part of the Universe, where a blast is about to happen, unleashing the supernova. Both Neph and Gajiv were braced for what's about to happen with their eyes on the centrifugal capsule. When the capsule started to shine with a bright white color, an improvised scroll-reader consumed the breed change scroll placed in it prior to the start. After a bit of thumping, the device let out steam as if the water was boiling in it. The ragged plaintive cry pierced the buzz and crackles, suddenly changing to laughter which was becoming more and more robotic over time.

The centrifuge stopped, opening the capsule's door.

Neph covered the worried Gajiv with his wings as much as he could.

After the cloud of thick electrified steam, the Nocturne dragon emerged out of the capsule. She turned blue, and Neph's mechanical parts were welded to her very firmly together with feathers left from early experiments with the capsule. Her nose, looking more like a beak, exhaled gusts of hot static field. With their opening, her eyes fulgurated, letting sparks of blinding lightning out. Right after, she teleported to Neph and dreadfully locked her eyes to his.

Neph started to tremble in fear and wonder.

"Glory be to the great god of thunders. He summoned me to serve the dragons of his clan. The task. The task is required." She slowly pulled her sparkling eyes closer to Neph's, his insides flipped over. He nearly jumped out of his skin, turning pale in fright.

"Lightning dragons must assign difficult and long-term tasks. The absence of such task equals to the dragon's elimination." Nocturne dragon was seeming dead serious about that.

"Give her a task, Neph… What's the problem? Neph, what's wrong with you? You… you're the mind of our brigade… Neph?!" Gajiv tremulously looked out of the Fae's wing, seeing him transfixed with heavy breath. The mechanical gears, firmly attached, were imminently moving closer, ready to rip him to shreds. "Tell her something!"

One electric spark after, Bogsneak froze, embraced by the mechanical construction, helplessly witnessing the slashed Fae, turning mute, but this time, probably forever. After disposing of her first victim, 'the owl' switched to the second.

"I have the task for you!" Bogsneak rasped. "I'll assign you a task!"

Letting out a spark of lightning out of her eyes, the construction stopped with plangent chunking noise.

"In the name of the great Stormcatcher, I receive the task. The task."

"Find…" Gajiv mumbled. "Find the way out of these caves. Fly across the world, rep…porting potential th…threats to our home…"

Waggling her head a bit, the creation of the scientific mind finally nodded, releasing the Bogsneak.

"Task accepted. The reports about its completion will be provided once in twenty-four hours. On your monitor. And to our god in his thoughts through the electric field. Proceeding to the task."

The electromechanic owl swished out of the room lightning fast, leaving the frightened Bogsneak alone, listlessly nestled against the hall's corner.

"What have we done… What have I… done…"
