.[ Salazar ] | Unranked Ancient | Botanist |
┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
The Banescale slithered through the understory, a mere flash of green and red amidst the foliage. His lithe form wound around a gigantic tree trunk, climbing higher and higher until he was dangling from an enormous branch in its shaded canopy. There, a large pitcher hung, a brilliant red on the edges, with dark maroon veins running over green down to its base.
It was about a third of the size of the Banescale-- large enough to hold a small mammal or reptile in its basin. Indeed, this was what the Banescale was looking for. Salazar had cultivated each pitcher plant himself, carefully growing them in his homemade greenhouse before introducing them into his favorite patch of jungle habitat, perfectly suited to the carnivorous plant’s tastes. As he peered over the edge of this particular plant, he could see several small frogs hopping happily inside. The perfect snack. Salazar reached his barbed tail into the pitcher’s deep well, spearing two of the frogs on the end of it. Each of Salazar’s quills contained a venom deadly to most prey (thankfully not quite potent enough to kill a full grown dragon). The frogs expired in seconds, a quite painless death, as his venom merely numbed his prey into unconsciousness. Salazar gently extracted his tail, careful not to scrape any of the pitcher’s barbs along the way. These barbs would prevent any prey from escaping the pitcher’s clutches once caught, although most never tried. The sweet nectar pooled at the bottom of the pitcher was attractive to nearly every living creature, including dragons! More than once, Salazar had come upon a pitcher with a strange dragon perched on its edge, trying in vain to reach the tempting liquid at its base without falling in in the process. Salazar often extracted some of this sweet liquid, bottling it and selling it at the local markets or giving it to Calcifer and Kageyama to be used in delicious desserts and drinks. After gobbling up the frogs he had skewered, Salazar licked the end of his tail clean, savoring the few drops of nectar that clung there. He inspected the pitcher for any signs of tampering or damage, and then darted speedily away to check the next one. He left one frog behind, still alive and swimming blissfully in the pitcher, unaware that the liquid he was drinking was really a mild poison. Harmless to large creatures such as dragons, but over time, deadly to those smaller animals that consumed large quantities of it. In a few hours the frog would be dead, its body slowly starting to dissolve inside a living tomb, bringing nourishment to the plant itself. The circle of life would continue, short but sweet. |
