Etair The Plague Hunter |
Leaving the controlled chaos of the Mirror pack island is somewhat strange, but you can’t say you are particularly upset; the bunch were quite a lot to handle. You find yourself dipping underneath the majority of the islands in the Platforms, flying low in their shadows to observe the ground far below, only to spy a low hanging island set towards the back of the Platforms. It’s crescent shaped and difficult to make out in low light, so you fly closer. Stepping onto the island, you are shocked. The entire ground is devoid of grass, a mix of rocky clay and oddly green dirt. There’s a few dead trees towards one end of the island, a pitiful cover for a crumbling stone tower. You nearly leave the dilapidated island, but are stopped in your track by a pair of long-legged dogs running towards you, tails wagging. A deep red Guardian emerges from the tower moments later, tossing a headdress aside as he approaches.
“Managed to find my home I see, that’s a rarity. Glad for the company though, and it looks like Inam and Taro like you, care to stay a bit? I’m Etair, a… hunter of sorts.” |

Origins
|
|
Etair is not who he once was, both literally and metaphorically. In the more literal sense, Etair has been reborn by magic, his skin resewn to muscle and bones refitted with joints. When the Guardian was quite young, he fell gravely ill, a plague of deadly proportions that had claimed his faithful hounds days before. The Guardian had been living in a diseased land, one that claimed lives without care and bowed to no master. He too would have died had it not been for a stranger with golden eyes and a gilded mane, who brought him from the brink of death. With magic so potent and gentle, the stranger mended his body, and then his soul by returning his hounds--Taro and Inam--to his side.
The stranger introduced themselves as Sarabi and offered Etair a different life, one where there was a chance of good, as slim as it may be. They took the young Guardian in, trained him to fight, to hunt, to survive in a world that begged him not to. Etair took to the training easily, pulling his hounds into his work as well. Then, Sarabi began to teach Etair magic. Etair was not as skilled a magician. He lacked the mental focus and the natural talent, his anger at the world too often seeped into his efforts and threw off the spell. He would try to light a fire and instead douse the logs, or he would attempt to bring a cup to him only for it to shatter dramatically. Sarabi was patient, but eventually relented on the subject, though grudgingly. |
Eventually, Etair reached a point where Sarabi was satisfied with his training, granting him a proper task in life. The Guardian was to become a warrior for the masses, a guard against life’s evils, a Hunter of Plague. Sarabi explained that, when they brought Etair back from the brink of death, they instilled an immunity to disease from then on. Infections, wounds, illnesses, and plagues would be nothing more than a temporary bother, no longer a threat to him or his hounds. It was a relief, and a chance. Etair seized it.
Taking his new title of Plague Hunter, Etair set out across the land, using his skills to fight off creatures born in diseased land, slogging through poison marshes and driving out senseless death from the land. The hunter never stayed long enough to be called a hero, never crowed his power or asked for something in return. He simply went, fought for those who couldn’t, and left, hounds by his side. Eventually, Etair found himself wandering the Windswept Plateau, having finished his hunt hours ago. Despite Sarabi’s ongoing offer to lodge with them, Etair did not want to return to the Arcanist’s realm and instead chose to seek a home in the Plateau. The air here was fresh, the dragons gentle, and it was peaceful; he craved nothing more than peace. Mind made up, Etair sought out a clan, arriving at the magnificent Platforms of the Galestorm Flyers, who were always welcoming to strangers, a stay that quickly became permanent. Etair still hunts frequently, searching out the disease in the land and visiting Sarabi, but now calls the peaceful lands of the Flyers, home. |

Etair is somewhat of a strange dragon. Though furious at the world and the death it brings, Etair is not an innately angry dragon. He is soft and gentle with his hounds, cracks jokes and speaks jovially with his friends, and rarely ever aims for a fight with another soul. He craves peace, an end to death and war and sadness, yet will fight tooth and nail to get it. Despite an endless feeling of “smallness”, Etair takes the world as his Charge, swearing to protect its inhabitants from whatever may come their way.
Underneath it all is a sadness, a bone deep exhaustion from an endless struggle. Sometimes, after long hunts or another chip in the life of his Charge, Etair will return to his stone tower and not be seen for days. Sometimes, he thinks it is a mistake for someone as tender hearted as him to take on a Charge that dies so easily, so frequently, yet he will not abandon it. |
