Once upon a time, there was a brilliant researcher. This researcher studied strange relics, bizarre items made of materials unknown to Sornieth. Silvery metal, soft as clay but impossibly strong. Clear glass that changes colors with a tap of a claw. Statues of unidentified stone, in the forms of unknowable creatures.

Then, one day, the Forbidden Portal was discovered, and this researcher was one of many who flocked to investigate this incredible site. Most were cautious, even fearful- understandably so, no one knew what may lie on the other side. Many fled when creatures began to escape from the portal, fearing what these visitors may intend.

But the researcher was not afraid. This was the pinnacle of her studies, the clearest proof of life beyond this world. So she stayed. Long after the fervor ended, long after the last research station packed up and went home. And one day, deciding she needed to see it for herself, she slipped into the portal.

She came back, of course. But she came back different. She's still brilliant, still proud and brave, but she is different. She glows with an unnatural light, moves in unsettling ways. She never blinks. None of her many eyes blink. Her curiosity sated, she came back to Sornieth to give her newfound, world-altering knowledge to others. For a price.
