You would think that being a lady’s maid would be a low status job. Sometimes, you would even be right. But not for Rey.

She’d been at the trading post, hoping to be offered a post before her small amount of coins ran out, when a dignified imperial with a hood mostly covering her face approached. She stared at the group of dragons Rey was standing with, her eyes far away as though thinking about something entirely different. And then she approached, and beckoned to Rey to follow.

Once they were away from the others, the dragon pushed back her hood to show her medallion. Rey gasped. It was a large gold piece embossed with the crest of the most famous school for psychics in all of Sorneith.

“I would like to offer you a position,” the dragon said, her voice soft and hissy. “I am in need of a discreet and loyal maid, and you seem less afraid of psychics than most of these dragons. My name is Whisper, and I am the soothsayer of Clan Paratus.”

Rey swallowed hard. “Discreet?” she asked. “I don’t know what you do with your abilities, but I’m not going to be a part of any crimes.” She knew that some dragons with psychic abilities made their money by betting on sports, others by foretelling when rich dragons would be away and robbing their lairs.

Whisper smiled briefly. “Good,” she said simply. “I try my hardest to behave in an ethical way. I demand discretion only because you may overhear private readings, and it would not do to spread gossip about these sessions.”

At that answer, Rey felt embarrassed and silly for her accusation, and dipped her head. Whisper reached out a claw and tilted her chin back upward. “If we are to work together, you must never, ever apologize for not wanting to do wrong. You do not know me. Your first instinct was not blind acceptance, and this is what draws me to you.”

And so after some more discussion, Rey had come back with Whisper, and had been installed as her maid, with her own room that was in Whisper’s apartments instead of in the crowded servants’ quarters. And her employer’s unique social status showed in her daily interactions. Though some dragons avoided her as she ran her lady’s errands, others treated her with far more respect than usually given a maid.
