Biography

MSLant1_L.png Perspective: Hatchlings

It's odd enough, being a newly-hatched dragon in this strange world.

Coming into being with a whispered, ancient song echoing through your mind? Well, that just turns the oddness up right past eleven.

Born of Fire and Flame, Banescale must rise!
Flamecaller’s Children, take now to the skies!

You could just barely make out the song against the noise around you. Now, you hadn't much experience with song at all, seeing as you've just recently hatched, not but fifteen minutes ago. And yet, something pulls at the back of your mind, telling you that this song would be the most important one you'd ever hear.

When the Flame calls, we know what we must do:
Fly far and fly wide, we take and consume!

Where was it coming from, though? You glanced beside yourself and saw your twin emerging from her egg not too long after you. And as you watched, you saw her take on the same pose as you. A straining position, her head, turning to the side, just like yours was. Desperately trying to hear the words of the song you needed to know.

Deep into the ice with magma we--

"Do you hear that?"
Of course you heard it. You tuned to your sister and acknowledged. Who could ignore it's tantalizing melody?

The tiny dragon before you, however, seemed confused at your statement. There was no sound to be heard, she assured you. You were safe, and it was quiet, in this glade.

You opened your mouth to object, but the song interrupted your thoughts with increasing fervor.

Our pride was our fall, our ego our shame,
As Ice overtook our Fire and Flame.

No, no. That wasn't right. This was a song of power- of incredible might! Not a song of.. of....

You glanced over at your twin and saw tears streaming down her face, and felt something wet traveling down your own.

A small strand of swirling gold pushed in front of the pink dragon, cooing and making sounds of reassurance.

"Don't-- now now, don't cry, young ones- you're safe here, there's no need to fear..."

What were they talking about? Of course there was reason to fear. There was reason for nothing but fear. The world was ending, was it not? You had just been brought into it, but you felt certain: this was the end of it all.

You glanced up, past the gold and the pink, to see two large, furry dragons, staring at the both of you with wide eyes, taking steps backwards. A single word blossomed in your mind, and from the look on your sister's face, in hers as well.

"Galoer."

And with the word, a flood of emotion. Of memories, long since lost to the flow of time. Of many years spent, traveling, wreaking havoc. Of a battle, long ago fought, and then lost. Of an end, steeped in misery, wrapped in a shroud of frost and pain.

The two Galoers must have noticed the spark of recognition in your eyes, as they immediately turned tail and ran into the cover of the forest. You were about to rear up and go after them- for what reason, you were still unsure- as a new verse found it's way into your mind.

If you should fly free, remember our song:
Fly far and fly wide to see the next dawn!

Fly free... yes, that sounded right. You were free now, after all. You and your dearest sister had the chance to begin anew in this strange glen. You backed down, and pressed your tiny form against that of your twin. And as you closed your eyes and sank into sleep, basking in the comfort of the presence of your fellow Banescale, the final words of the song of your people rang through your mind, clear and bright as the fire within you.

Born in Fire and Flame, Banescale now rise!
Flamecaller’s Children must take to the skies!
If you should fly free, remember our song:
Fly far and fly wide to see the next dawn!
Learn from our failure and join with the world,
Our future, our Flame, flies with you unfurled!
