Perhaps it was naive of Hyperrectangle to think that they were the only researchers on a quest. Noble pundits, conquerors of the abyss, they were foretasting terrific discoveries. None of them noticed the subject of their studies sniffing and lurking, following their every step.

That's how the Nameless was born. One day he just appeared - and it turned out he was kind of permanent. A strange child with piercing eyes, silent, emotionless, as if he was deprived of any generic instincts. Cebren, the inexplicable object of his interest, identified the guest as some kind of spirit. The child was dumped out the door, but he simply reappeared in the middle of the submarine as though nothing had happened. In time Hyperrectangle realized they couldn't get rid of him, whatever they did. And so acceptance was the only option.

What is known of the Nameless? That he's unbelievably powerful - he can change the directions of currents and shut down the submarine without showing any effort. He is self-learning - he mimicked other crewmen until he developed his own personality. And he is surprisingly patient. Resentment isn't something that comes to him naturally - at least it hasn't yet.
He can't be hurt or killed - though less honourable crewmen have tested this. Obviously, they shouldn't have underestimated his ability to learn. When the Nameless attacked Parmenides out of curiosity, it became clear that dragons must be cautious with what he sees and experiences.
Coexistence with dragonkind taught the Nameless how to lie and how to pretend. Walking past endless berths and cabins, smiling politely and watching closely as Hyperrectangle approaches the truth, he resembles a slowly but inexorably creeping beast. No one knows what's on his mind, but apparently he can never be trusted.

• He is just the tool to observe and understand dragonkind. Cebren assumed that the sea created him to spy for it and protect its secrets.
• Despite general suspicion, he's genuinely cheerful with some dragons - especially with Moero, she who taught him how to speak.
• He was called Dionysus for his addiction to rum. Moero highly condemns the one who gave him alcohol.
• Since he belongs to the Earth domain, it's highly likely that he controls currents by modifying the seafloor relief.
