BOSC tender of the sacred orchard | he/him
ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
▾ In the Galehart clan, great importance is placed on food, and the act of sharing meals. Guests and travelers are always well-fed before going on their ways, and relationships with nearby draconic lairs and beastclans are maintained by generous sharing of the season's harvest, exchange of recipes, and communal meals. So far, the Galeharts have managed to live for a few generations in the cursed Cairnstone Mountains without conflict with the region's undead residents, largely in part by maintaining the cairns in their territory and offering fresh food to the spirits' altars during each holiday to keep them placated.
▾ Though the Galehart's gift economy and social structure is largely based around mutual sustenance, they are not a particularly agricultural clan. Most of their food is foraged, hunted, or bartered rather than grown, with the exceptions of a few well-tended food and herb gardens near the clan's capital. One of these gardens is called the Orchard of the Sacred Fire, and it's tended by a bogsneak named Bosc. ▾ The orchard began when Bosc stumbled upon a grove containing a few persimmon trees, his favorite fruit. He regularly returned to the grove, pruning the trees and harvesting the ripe fruits when branches became too laden to support them. Over time, he cleared some of the weedy underbrush around their trunks, and eventually planted a few more fruit trees: pears, apples, stone fruits and citrus. The grove hummed with pollinators, birds, bats, and other creatures who enjoyed the orchard's spoils. ▾ Perhaps due to some innate wellspring of energy near the grove, or Bosc's own efforts and elemental magic, the Sacred Fire orchard grew into a deeply blessed place. There are even rumors that fruits originating from this grove have healing properties. Bosc doesn't know much about that, he's just a humble farmer. He knows that when you listen to the land, and respect the needs of its occupants, it will reward you with a bountiful harvest. ▾ Some clans may covet such a special place, guard it jealously and greedily keep all of its wealth for themselves, but not the Galeharts. Instead, there is a taboo around selling any food produced in the Orchard of the Sacred Fire. These special fruits are only to be gifted, never directly profited from, because to profit from such a magical gift from the earth itself is to violate the trust of the land. Potash peaches are traded as tokens of affection between new mates. Wisp fruits are sliced and drizzled with coral carpenter honey as offerings to the deceased. Heaping baskets of apples are hauled at harvest time to neighbors and distant relations to see them well-fed and happy through the winter. It is no frivolous duty tending to and protecting such a special place, but Bosc loves his work. He believes he's been divinely favored to have been tasked with the responsibility of tending the fires of life and passing them along to others through the fruits of his labor.
