A R W E L
Arwel is a dragon of few words. Despite his terrifying appearance, he has a naturally warm aura that makes even the most aggressive dragon mellow out. He likes making people feel welcome in his store and will often play cards or talk with them when they come in, much to Zuko's annoyance. Annoying his young employee is the highlight of Arwel's day. He is a master of coddling, always at the ready with a pun or philosophical phrase. At the end of the day, he would willingly die for the kid because he refuses to lose anyone else.



It is quite fitting that Arwel's name means "prominent". Dragons from his village were practically bred for war and were an important resource for the Plague flight. Arwel upheld and exceeded the brutal expectations given to him by his community. Growing up he enjoyed being the top of his class, basking in the warm glow of praise of his instructors. As such, he saw his first battle at the age of eighteen. It was a patrol gone wrong at an Earth Kingdom colony. The townsfolk rebelled and innocent blood was spilt. Although the experience shook him, Arwel didn't dwell on what he had done because it had been drilled into him since childhood.

There were many more skirmishes and one heavy battle before Arwel took his first command. The responsibility was overtaken by excitement and at twenty-three Arwel charged into battle with his companions beside him. This was the first time he experienced victory as a general. In between the wars, he met Kiya, the dragon who would eventually become his wife. The two Goalers lived happily together. Kiya was a lantern maker by trade and taught her mate the intricate ways. She also taught him that perhaps war was not the only thing worth living for. They decided to run away from the army and start over. Under the cover of darkness, Arwel and Kiya fled from their camp but suddenly found themselves in a border skirmish. Kiya was killed and Arwel was promptly banished.

Arwel traveled far and wide until he happened upon a tiny town at the base of a mountain. There he set up a small tea shop and tried to forget. Two years later, he woke up hearing teapots shattering and muffled cursing. Believing it was someone from his military past, he attacked. But instead of an assassin, it was a skinny juvenile spitting smoke at him. He was hit by a wave of nostalgia at this brash youth and offered him a job at the tea shop. Zuko grudgingly accepted.

The Arcane Apothecary remains the most prominent (and only) tea shop in Kikai territory. Arwel is slowly teaching his adopted disaster how to brew Plaguemaster's Potion and realizing his war is finally over.
