Lore:

Calendula has always been insecure about the bright orange flowers that bloom on her body. This insecurity of hers is possibly rooted in the fact that her two siblings (Consus and Oleander) do not share the same colour of blossoms as her. She felt like the odd one out amongst them both, and she felt like she should've been born with the same lovely, green blossoms that they had. As a hatchling, a barrage of negative thoughts about herself always seemed to swivel around in the forefront of her mind.

In the ice cold lands she hailed from, there was a constant lack of warmth and affection. Unfortunately for her, she constantly sought for warmth in others as a young hatchling. This trait of her made her appear weaker to the older Gaolers in their society. But she couldn't help it. She couldn't control this need of hers at first.

She ended up becoming closest to her brother Consus. For that reason, she was devastated when they were forced to separate from each other. He was a dragon she never wished to part with. He may not have thought, or felt the same, though. But the fact that she thought that he was a caring dragon and treated her well meant something to her. That was enough for her.

Her brothers were given an order much more quickly than her. Consus, as a hatchling, was overly protective, and already was beginning to show where his talents lie… He could sniff out even faint smells of Shade-touched beings, and the lies hidden within their words. It was no surprise to her that he was chosen to become an Overseer.

She highly respected and looked up to him, and wished to be like him in some way. But it may just have been wishful thinking on her part.

Though, to her dismay she probably wouldn't belong to the same order as him, because her place in Gaoler society certainly wasn't as well respected or high-ranked, and they all judged and looked at her differently for her previous demeanour she once had as a hatchling.
But if she had a chance at becoming a Keeper, she would be satisfied with that choice. No. She is quite determined to become one, at any cost. The training she endured was strenuous and hard on her emotionally, however she thought it would work out in the end.

Later in the future, she would help to capture, guard, and observe lesser Shade creatures. And… maybe someday far in the future she would see her dear brother again. However, she hoped that by that time, she, as well as him weren't too changed by that point.

Even though she was also a part of a clan, she constantly felt alone—or… it felt like the others (if they weren't Gaolers, that is,) left her alone. When she walked near them, or looked their way, it seemed as if the other dragons gave her cautious, and… even fearful looks.

Why? But… wasn't she still the same dragon she once was? She… didn't feel like she behaved any different. What changed? Did something in her training change her? Is it for the better?

She thought she wanted this outcome, but she was feeling lonelier than ever.

In some earlier encounters in her training to become a Keeper, she didn't get away with just slight scratches, but apparently other dragons do not view these scratches and faded wounds the same way as Gaolers do.
To these other dragons, they aren't seen as respected battle scars. But this is not something she was ever told, so she continued to believe that it was something else about her that they didn't like. Something that she would have to… work on, or change again. If she ever learned what that exact thing is.

Day in and day out, she returned to her solitary life which felt like something that she had created for herself. A prison… of her own making. Constantly… observing the shade-touched that she was duty-bound to guard.

There… in that dark, lonely corner of the clan, she continued to reside.

Now, it's said that this particular area is consumed with orange flowers that flourish during the night and can absorb the energy of the shade-touched creatures stuck there, trapped. The blossoms act as vessels for their souls, and in time, they will eventually fall off her body when that soul… has perished and moved on from this world.

Once she got older, she was able to somewhat overcome her self-consciousness regarding how she felt about the colour of her blossoms, but this was because her flowers began to remind her of not only her brother that she had lost that day, but also… the only comfort and warmth she was given.

As she started to lean her head down to gently grasp a fallen blossom that had drifted off from her body… she hummed.

Sometimes sadly, sometimes happily, depending on whether or not her brother's image came to mind at the time.

With each blossom that fell off her, she would keep them in her den as a reminder of him, as well as the souls who perished, and the past life they all lived.
