Kiri was born into circus life, every moment not spent training her showmanship devoted to selling greasy carnival food or tricking fools into playing unwinnable games. Perhaps if she were more like her siblings she would enjoy this life, but Kiri has always been more introverted, more sensitive to the lights and noises, and frankly couldn't picture a worse place to live. She was in her own personal hell.

On one particularly rowdy night she steps out of the fairgrounds to soothe her frayed nerves, but standing on the outskirts isn't enough. She wanders further and further into the darkness, until the echoes of the carnival's music fades and she can no longer see the glow of the lights at all. The darkness is alien as it is healing.

She should go back. She will be missed.

But she looks around at this land of perpetual dusk, where the only sounds are the occasional deep rumble of the earth's churning gut, and she sees paradise. She'd be a fool to turn back; and she's never fit in among fools.

• still dresses like a circus because regular clothes make her feel silly. IT'S ALL SHE KNOWS.
• friends with Hakan but otherwise doesn't bother with having a social life.
• might be going feral, if the hissing is any indication.
