When Dragons Collide - i. Chance Meeting [visit next profile for part ii]
The colorful tundra sighed. He had been so certain that he wanted to dedicate his life to chasing rainbows, surrounding himself with dragons like himself, but that hadn't been as fulfilling as he had hoped. He felt ashamed of himself for giving up. Maybe he should start again, and try harder this time? But the thought formed a lump in his throat.
Then he mumbled, "Oof!" as he bumped into something sturdy but soft.
He looked up, and up, and saw himself standing in front of an obelisk so beautiful that he went slack-jawed for a few seconds. Flustered, he tried to recover, but ended up shouting in frustration. "Hey, watch where you're going, you big doofus!"
The imposing figure, who had been staring off into the horizon, looked down at him with a kind expression. He smelled like ozone. "So sorry, little one. My head is always in the clouds. I struggle quite a bit with situational awareness. Makes long flights pretty interesting. Once flew seven miles in the wrong direction; my sister will never let me live that down. Anyway, name's Lionel, and I apologize for almost making you into a pancake."
The tundra's eyes shot to meet the obelisk's. He stared into those pools of pink long and hard for several seconds, then said with a small, incredulous smile, "My name is also Lionel."
The obelisk's eyes gained a joyful glint when he processed those words, and the most wonderful sound escaped from him - a deep, rich belly laugh, full of vitality and a passion for life. It was such a contagious laughter that the tundra could not help but join in, and the two of them stood there making a scene for a full minute while passers-by milled around them.
When the giggle fits had finally subsided, tundra-Lionel spoke first. "I should apologize to you. I wasn't really watching where I was going, either. These last few weeks have been... kinda rough, to be honest. Still, that's no excuse. Can I make it up to you somehow?"
"Mm." Obelisk-Lionel grinned. "I was just thinking that I could go for some piping hot tea in this cold weather, and I know a great teahouse in this marketplace. You can treat me, and I can treat you, and that way we can both apologize. Now, if I could just remember where it is?"
"Can you recall the name of the place? Or what it smelled like?"
"Nope. But I do remember it was very... frilly. Like the kind of place you'd expect to find a bunch of old ladies. Come to think of it, I think there is usually a flock of them there at any given time."
Tundra-Lionel felt warmer already, but he wanted to keep talking to this man. He smiled again and said, "I think I know the one you're referring to. Follow me, you doof."
