in his youth, eclipse was raised to be a warrior. his family used the arcane arts as a way to gain power within their home clan-- eclipse has chosen a different route for power. while able to prove himself on the battlefield, he prefers to stay back in the shadows, directing the war from behind. his ideal situation is preventing any fighting from happening in the first place-- as a diplomat, he's intent on finding more peaceful resolutions to even longstanding conflicts.

he keeps telesthesia's more aggressive and violent tendencies in check, preferring to use words to sway events. it's not that he's intent on spreading peace-- no, eclipse's main intent behind becoming a diplomat was to be able to gain power over others in ways that wouldn't make him too much a target himself. after all, how can a king remain in power if everyone is intent on killing him?
