Enireu
Big Brother - Protector
━━━━━━━ lore ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

____
Thunder rumbled in the distant sky, but it was the shrieks and roars of dragons that jarred Enireu from his sleep. He shook his head to clear it and peered out of the small alcove that he and his sister had claimed. He rose to his feet and nudged Asecha awake.

“Get up, something’s wrong, I don’t know what’s happening, but it sounds bad.”

Asecha yawned and blinked up at her brother, who even from an early age had been twice her size. It was why he’d always assumed the ‘big brother’ role, though they both did hatch on the same day. She admired him for that, his strong presence had always been comforting, so she never minded when he made himself her protector.

“What do you mean, Enireu?” She stood and moved to peer out past her brother’s shoulder and gasped as one of the dragons of their clan crashed to the ground not far from their alcove.

“That’s…that’s Eskiel, what is going on? Who’s attacking the clan?”

The downed dragon had been brutally mauled and with shredded wings had been unable to prevent the fall and impact that finally ended his life.

Enireu stepped out a little further to look around. In the distance, near the center of their clan’s gathering space, stood a massive green imperial he’d never seen before. The imperial was adorned in with bones, and exuded an aura of malicious power, that made the snapper shudder even from where he stood.

He started to turn his head to say something to his sister, when a high pitched shrieking drew his attention to a small blue blur that ended up slamming into his neck before she could stop herself.

The little fae dropped to the ground at his feet, then shook herself and looked up at them.

“Why are you still standing here?! Run, Fly! Unforgiven’s clan is here, they’re going to kill everyone! FLY! RUN! Get out of here!”

With that, she turned and scrambled to get airborne and flew off, clearly hoping her small size would make her not worth anyone’s attention.

Asecha frowned, then looked up at her brother. Being snappers, they were unable to fly, certainly not far enough to outrun imperials. She could also see guardians and a couple of ridgebacks. All of them clearly trained for war and fighting. She sighed, beginning to truly worry. They could try to run, but would be easily overtaken by anyone who noticed them trying to flee.

“What do we do?”

Enireu shrugged, “Only thing we can do, we have to try to get out of here, but if we run too far in the open we’ll be more easily spotted. I guess it may come in handy that we’re not brightly colored. How many times have others teased us about blending in with the rocks? Just stay close to the rocks and move carefully, maybe we can get far enough away and they won’t bother to look for us.”

His sister nodded and took one more glance toward the sound of battle. “Some of the clan dragons are putting up a fight, maybe that will keep them busy too, let’s go. You want to lead or should I go first?”

He shook his head, “You go first, I’ll follow behind. That way I can watch out for you better.”

Asecha gave a small smile at that and leaned up to touch her muzzle to his before doing as he said. She edged out of the alcove and started moving carefully, wanting to hurry but not wanting to draw unwanted attention to the movement. She hoped that the enemy dragons would stay focused where the majority of the remaining clan dragons seemed to be fighting them.

Enireu moved to fall in behind his sister, keeping himself alert for any strange dragons, he hoped there wouldn’t be any patrols looking to catch dragons fleeing from the clan. They were nearly to the end of the rocky cliff side that formed one of the clan’s boundaries. He glanced up and around them, knowing this was where it would be so much more dangerous, once they had to break cover and head out across open ground.

His sister hesitated, faltering a step when there was no more rock to hide against. She looked back at him, her light green eyes wide with worry. He gave her a gentle nudge. He kept his voice low, not wanting to call attention to them.

“Keep going, as fast as you can, I’ll be right behind you.”

She hesitated a second longer, then finally bolted, as fast as her short legs could move. She had no idea where to run too, or where they would go, but she kept running. They just had to get far enough away to be safe, then they could figure it out. As long as she had Enireu, Asecha felt like they could make it through anything.

Enireu followed after her, but he was bigger, heavier. It was harder for him to keep up the rapid pace when they weren’t used to having to run. He felt his heart lurch in his chest when a shadow passed over the ground near them. A mirror swooped down at Asecha and he watched in horror, still a little too far away to protect her, as his sister crouched low, tucking her wings in tight against her sides. He heard the cry of pain as the mirror’s claws raked across his sister’s hip and back. He pushed himself forward, rushing as hard and fast as he could to reach her, to defend his sister. With the clan being destroyed around them, she was all he really had. He wasn’t about to lose her now.

The mirror landed, lifted its head to the sky and let out a shrieking howl, then turned its gaze on the snappers. The female licked her lips as she opened her maw in a toothy snarl. “Where do you think you’re going?”

Enireu reached his sister’s side and paused long enough to give her a concerned look and a low whisper. “Are you hurt badly? I’m sorry.”

The little snapper shook her head, the scratches hurt yes, but they weren’t life threatening, yet. “I’m okay.”

Enireu turned to face the mirror, and blocked her with his bigger body when she lunged at Asecha again. “Leave her alone!” He roared angrily. He was terrified too, but protecting his sister gave him strength beyond that fear.

The mirror shrieked again and hissed at him. “Fools to flee your fate, Unforgiven said none are to leave.”

A larger shadow circled and a big guardian dropped down, nearly identical in color and markings to the mirror. “Nairi, return to the others, I’ll watch these two.”

Nairi hissed, shaking her wings in frustration. Clearly she’d wanted to get a piece of the snappers, but finally, she nodded and sprang back into the sky and headed back where the sound of fighting was still noticeable.

The guardian turned his head back to the snappers after watching her go, and he sighed heavily. “I am truly sorry.”

Enireu looked up at him. “Please, just let us go, we’re no danger to you or your clan.”

The guardian shook his head, settling on his haunches to watch the pair. “That doesn’t always matter with Unforgiven. And I’m afraid I can’t let you go. Nairi’s seen you, and she’s not one to lie to Unforgiven.”

He nodded back the way they had come, “Come on, let’s go. Unforgiven will have to decide what to do with the two of you.”
